Surveys suggest that 1.5% of the population is gay, assuming every club has a squad of 30 then that makes 2760 pro footballers across the 4 divisions. Based on the stats that means there should be at least 41 gay footballers yet there isn't a single openly gay footballer in England.
Now I don't think football is an anomaly and there will be a number of pro players who are gay, however the prejudice that still surrounds being gay prevents them from being open about who they are.
People aren't asking for 'more gay footballers' they just want to create an environment in the sport whereby if you happen to be gay you don't have to hide it for fear of abuse.
