I have been having a bit of a think about Henderson and his legacy today. I have read the views on why fans dont want him back, and I get it. I used to get involved in the rainbow laces campaign when I was coaching and felt it was an important topic. I was disappointed when he went to Saudi. I think he lost a fair bit of goodwill.

I think there needs to be a bit of balance though. He has done so much charity work, and has positively impacted the lives of so many. Non of that suddenly disappeared when he went to Saudi. The work he did during Covid and the money raised didnt suddenly get taken off those that benefited. He is well known for helping needy kids, without seeking publicity. Those kids didnt have to give their memories back because he went to Saudi. Jamie Carragher said there is no Liverpool captained who has done more for Liverpool off the pitch than he has. That is quite a statement.

I am not sure he is the player we need. Maybe he is a role model we need though. Someone who has done so much in and out of the game, and who has made a monumental mistake. And at then end of it all is still an England player. We certainly wont be linked with someone with his experience this summer, and if he comes in and helps young players on their journey somehow, maybe we all benefit from a lad from Sunderland returning home and doing a bit for us and our city.

Surely doesn’t start again for England tomorrow? I’m hoping he really freshens it up, especially in midfield

It was a no from me due to his gay ambassador role being totally ditched for the Saudi sportswashing money... which he didn't take, but it was his choice- probably not to leave Liverpool but they needed to freshen up. Happy to do a Reeves and change my stance/mind after reading the Tuchel glowing recommendation of what he brings to the dressing room. BHH.

There’s not a single doubt about what he brings to the dressing room, can he still do it on the pitch in the PL? He’s 35 next week, a couple of seasons since he played over here. It’s a shame England haven’t faced proper opposition this week, would’ve been nice to see him up against better players.

There is the option of signing him as a 'Player /Coach'.
That way he keeps in close with the Players and has a sort of 'Kevin Ball' role.

Much would depend on what sort of salary he might be looking for.
It would be ironic if he has mad so much out of his short stay in Arabia, that this doesn't concern him.

Personally I had no hang up about his moving there. In his position I believe I would have done the same.
His time at Liverpool was obviously over and he had been magnificent for them.
So who would grudge him one last big payday to top up his pension?
Well, lots of people it seems.

PS - I got paid about £10-10s a week when I spent time in that area. :emoticon-0102-bigsm

His Saudi deal was £700k a week and it's not confirmed how much of that deal he actually received, some are saying he left it on the table by leaving. At Ajax he is on between 65k and 75k a week according to capology and salary sport. It is hinted that he has a release clause whereby he can release himself from his contract (nearly did that to join Monaco in the winter), if he does that to join his boyhood club you'd have to assume he would be willing to play for the club so long as they offer him a reasonable deal. I could see him on a 2-year deal at 50k a week, potentially even less if the club have reasonable grounds to convince him why they can pay him less.

Let's face it mate....I'm not his bank manager,but I know he doesn't need the money...he's set for life.
So,the motivation for him to come home would be to contribute to our future,and,presumably, the financials would take a back seat.

True but he will want to feel respected ie the club treating him fair and in accordance with other players. I remember a player in La Liga in the early 2000's who was on €1 a week as his club were in financial ruin, someone on here might remember who it was, Jordan strikes me as a person who would do that for the club if it was dying, but we don't have that problem these days.

Yeah sure it was Lucas Perez after his spell in england said he didnt need the money but the club does, ended up top scorer and won promotion

I reckon Tuchel and Heitinga know a thing or two about football, fairly sure that Klopp fella was pretty clued up as well. If those 3 collectively still rate JH then I reckon we might be onto something. He is exactly what we need, experienced, knows the club and the league inside out. He wont be on mega money or a long term deal, its a sensible signing for the here and now. Rigg & Neil would thrive with him in the squad.

It'll be a very shrewd move by KLD / KS / RLB for next season.
 
It’s clear as day Henderson wouldn’t be a bad influence. I’m all for his experience and leadership qualities as I feel it’s something we need. The conern is, can he still do it on the pitch?
