What's a "career officer" and why is putting your life in their hands so dangerous?

It isn't the Crimean War you know.

Lol it hasn't changed since the Holy Roman empire never mind the Crimean, I am very interested in this subject and tbh nothing has changed since the times of caesar and Pompey.

Troops fight for each other when the **** hits the fan, not the queen some lofty moral or anything else. Generals and politicians and all the other career ladderists have different agendas.
Such was the rush by BLair to get the troops into the middle east that they didn't even bother to supply the approapriate equipment, soldiers dying because they were told to give up their their body armour, boots melting, it app smacks of fk them get in there and we'll worry about it later, and dont get me started on the slaughter of civvies, the US has been doing that since the 40s, and these are the people we should trust?

I believe that if those who lead us into war, as in the days of old kings, if they had to lead from the front, how many wars do you think would happen today?

Some races just make for tougher fighters I suppose. The English/British have always punched above their weight throughout history, often defeating much bigger forces eg Agincourt, the Armada, Trafalgar, Napoleon, Rorke's Drift, the Battle of Britain etc. The Scots were always a tough nut to crack too despite their relative lack of resources.

Scottish people are generally disturbed.

Part of what you say may be true but it's not career officers to blame, it's politicians. Same as it always was.

I was in the RAF, got my self a trade and did a few courses which the military paid for me to do. Now I am self employed with a mortgage on a nice house and have a decent car. If you have a certain area you fancy getting a trade in then go for it. <ok>

i've been considering joining the army for a few months. i'm basically bored and pissed off with the 9-5 life. so tedious and boring it's mind numbing.

any advice would be recommended <cheers>

A few questions:

First and foremost are you poor?

Would you mind being shot at?

Would you mind being killed?

Would you mind murdering human beings with whom you have had no disagreements?

Would you mind doing all the above so that the class of peoples who pay the least tax (politicians and international businesses) can further their own careers and their bank accounts?

If so, sign up.

If you're lucky, you can get out in 5 years with a trade, the RAF is the best place but any division of the forces could potentially send you career on a better path and private security work is ever in demand <ok>

For many brave and not so young men, The Falklands caught quite a few people out, as it was the first campaign in many years, people killed and people got killed, others came home ...damaged. Since former Yugoslavia dissolved there's been plenty of live one's for the daft 18 year old pups to see 2 or 3 tours. It's a brutal ****ing world out there for some, good luck.

True, I work with a lot who learned the craft in submarines.

Still, 5 years possibly being shot at.

I feel for those who are so poor or whose job prospects are so low that they end up having to take to the front line. Especially as war has got far more to do with preserving the status of the elites within certain cultures than it has do with international security.

At least the Irish accept their football league is crap so watch the PL and Irish sports. But the Scots somehow persist with the SPL. You've got to admire their dedication I suppose.

I see the SPL as how the english leagues were before all the money.

Before all the money, English sides won 8 European cups. You can't really compare that with the current state of Scottish football.

English sides won 8 European Cups....Yet it was a Scottish side(Celtic) that did it first...even though Man United fans wll tell you they were the first to win it.
They also think ''retaining'' the European Cup is winning it 31 years apart.
Liverpool were the first to become European Champions as European Champions. Forest also did it.

We were the first English side to do it. Obviously not THE first team to win it, no United fan will "tell you they were the first to win it". That was Real Madrid, not Celtic. Also, no United fan would say that winning it 31 years apart is "retaining" the trophy. I don't know where you got that from.

Why are you telling us about Liverpool and Forest retaining the trophy? We were talking about the state if Scottish football compared to English.

I see you are still the same old obsessed, bitter, clueless ******ed KPR. I hope you come on General Chat more often, it'll be amusing to see you torn to shreds by some of the merciless characters on here.
