"Ex-footballer Joey Barton has been charged with making malicious communications.
The former Man City player is due to appear in court later this month.
On his X account, the 41-year-old said he had been charged over tweets relating to broadcaster and multiple league title winner Eniola Aluko.
Cheshire Police said the charges concerned messages sent between 1st and 18th January.
In a statement, a force spokesman said a man from Widnes had been "summoned to court to face charges of malicious communications".
They added that following a police investigation, the Crown Prosecution Service had "authorised the charges for Joseph Barton".
The spokesman said the former footballer was due to appear at Warrington Magistrates' Court on 30th July."

Don't think many lads fans were fooled by that small period where he went through a bit of a renaissance because he was tweeting philosophical quotes and such ****e!
Anyone who genuinely thinks that racist little pseud is actually intelligent has a much lower bar for intelligence than I do, mind.
Barton is a gobby little outrage farmer. He's been a prick since he was born and he'll be a prick till the day he dies. Just hope he gets mercilessly filled in a few times along the way.

Any opposition can be easily countered by using the phrase, "Don't believe those lies in the media, do some proper research and you'll find the real truth."
Sadly that 'truth' is usually from just another Joey Barton or 'Tommy Robinson' who gets their 'facts' from other lunatics on the internet.
That truth is repeated until it becomes an absolute fact such as 'Only Nigel Farage has the answer to the immigration problem' ...

Funnily enough, I see that Tommy Robinson has fled the country today. Due in court tomorrow and very likely to see jail time, so he's been really brave and legged it.
Nothing says we take a firm stance on domestic violence and sends a clear message than a suspended sentence.

2 years suspended sentence ? does every thug get that, no room in the jails i reckon, money talks eh. well he's lucky in this country, but he'll never get into either USA or Australia i know that.
If I typed on here my thoughts about him I would be banned for life, I will stick with the fact that he is a racist cretin.
