To be fair to LJ, if Defoe want a 6m playing deal and Defoe isn't match fit, then I'd agree, what's the point. He's only worth signing if he will play for 18m.

Exactly

18 games. That's all we have left. If LJ doesn't want to disrupt everything we've done on what is essentially a gamble for 18 games, when there are hopefully other options out there, then I'm all for it.

I don't think Lee Johnson is the right manager to get us promoted, but I don't blame him for this.

The article seems pretty much nonsense anyway to be honest. It even says in it that Johnson hasn't ruled out signing Defoe :D It's covering so many bases.

I still don't understand why some think that Defoe is not match fit just because he hasn't had game time.

I'm an ex- FA coach and every squad player without injury, trains together.

....and if injury free, all those players are ready to start ...fact !

If we got two CF's in, including Defoe, and he only came on for the last 20 mins in every game (for those who thinks he's too old) he will still have a direct impact on those games.

KLD will make the final decision on this me thinks....

Sunderland’s head coach has not completely ruled out re-signing Defoe and is known to have spoken to the forward directly, but he is believed to harbour reservations about the wisdom of adding him to his squad at such a crucial stage of the season.

Ah so basically - anything could happen and we aren't getting as many hits as we'd hoped for this January

Ya telling me I might have to stay off “the other place”

I’m sick of pointing out the risks of taking on a 39 year old at a critical juncture like this.

As much as I love JD,I can understand the caution LJ may have. He surely wants game time...it's why he's coming....in front of a large number of fans...he said exactly that on Talksport the other day. But,he's 39,the deal is very short term, and he doesn't come close to fitting the model we've been looking at over the last 12 months or so. The other players will be in awe of him....we don't want a situation where they're all trying to play through him.....we've already had that with McGeady and we know it doesn't work. As far as the coaching is concerned,LJ has Jamie Mac and Phil Jevons among others.....does he see JD as complementing them or...as a disruption?

Defoe won't want to play against us this season no matter how professional he is.
Think we can all imagine the likely scenario if that happened!
