I'll also say, on the striker-acquisition front: if we don't think that a big target is available until the summer, it wouldn't be a bad time to add someone who is primarily one for the future, but who may already have the quality to contribute now, rather than signing another backup-calibre player at their peak.

So I'm saying that we should sign Josh Maja at Sunderland. Our current striker situation is in flux enough that we'd be an attractive landing spot, as a team that isn't afraid to give youngsters a chance that also plays a pacey sort of game that suits his talents.

He has already joined Bordeaux

Ronsey, sorry mate, he wasn’t dreadful. See above. Talented footballer, who worked hard sometimes, bad attitude and neither he nor his coach found the best from him.

Dreadful? No.

He did run into blind alleys a lot, but he also had the skills to create problems. A player needs a coach as well as himself to find the best way to make it work.
Fats, you're right - 'dreadful' is a little harsh. Never fathomed how he had such a reputation for assists as well as goals when he joined us and he translated neither for us - especially in terms of assists because technically he should have been able to open defences even if scoring was more a challenging problem in the EPL.

Agreed but Boufal is/can be a hard worker too, I'd love Ralph to get a crack at him if he's sorted his head out.

Agree totally. However, I was told that after the Chelsea game he was escorted to his locker to clear it out by 2 senior players and KD. IF true some serious bridge building needed too.

Hopefully it's BS as there's a quality entertainer in him somewhere.

A Sunderland fan has obviously had some fun on Wikipedia <laugh>

26 January 2019 Maja signed for French club Bordeaux on an four and a half year contract. After he signed, Maja wrote on Twitter, “I can’t wait to get started at Bordeaux. It is a dream come true to sit on the bench next to so many great players.”

This is the big question. Can he be given a second chance and that will be about how bad the incident was, how forgiving those players were or how much Ralph wants to have a look, not about how good he is or could be.

My view for what it’s worth, on Boufal, is that I would love to see how he fits into a side that is looking to get the ball forward quickly and hit on the break.
I think Ralph’s way will suit him.
Under previous managers we moved the ball slowly, so invariably when he received the ball he had little space to exploit and was often double marked.

As an add on, he may not have had many assists but there were many times when he played very incisive passes into dangerous areas that his teammates either couldn’t read or didn’t expect.
He could be good with Ings movement.

Or the strikers we had were just pretty crappy. Strange as Gabbi just didn’t have anyone on his advanced wavelength <whistle>

Beating players, creating chances and scoring goals is the most exciting part of football. It seems when we get someone who may be able to deliver that, a lot of our fans moan about them, expect perfection straight away, or give up

Football fans love to have a moan, and none more than some of our fellow Saints. I totally agree with you, FLT, in your description of what we want to see. Funny, so many rave about Le Tiss, but I recall the moans around me when he was having a nothing day. And don't start me on the verbals directed at Mick Channon.

I'd love to see Boufal back in a striped shirt. Someone said you didn't know what he was going to do. Well, this incuded the opposition, but what they feared was that he'd run through them. Most players are predictable. One wild card with talent will do me, if we can sort out the politics.

When does passing a ball into a space your team mates didn't expect morph from being genius to being just a bad pass. <laugh>

I accept that even good players can be let down by not having the right team mates or manager, but a truly good player surely would be able to adapt and not throw a strop. As Boufal is already our player, it would be great if he was the answer to our prayers and suits Ralph's style, but he may have burnt his bridges.

TBF to Boufal and others like him, Redmond is our most exciting player and he struggled to shine under MP2 and Hughes, but whilst not a revelation (because his skill was always obvious) is now like a new player. I can believe that some out on loan may suit our new manager, but wouldn't be surprised if they preferred to stay where they are.

Boufal might not be right for Ralph and he may have burned his bridges with Saints. All I am saying is that I find it sad when I read people calling him poor or dreadful. It’s an English thing. He is a huge talent and we need to be finding players like him and trying to coach them to get the best from them. Beating players, creating chances and scoring goals is the most exciting part of football. It seems when we get someone who may be able to deliver that, a lot of our fans moan about them, expect perfection straight away, or give up too soon.

I’d rather we try again with a Boufal type than find another Shane Long.

He just needs a run of six games :bandit:

Dammit, I missed that. Bargain at £3.5m.

Apparently most of that is coming straight back because Sunderland still owed payments for Khazri (lol). So Sunderland management are briefing out that it won't be reinvested, their fans are obviously thrilled.
