Can't believe we've not had a YouTube video yet. Here's one, complete with the expected music.

Can't remember exactly what the stats are but aren't we near the top for crosses into the box? 6'3 tall, appears to have good movement in and around the box too. If we get Cedric, Bertrand, Tadic etc putting in crosses we could have our next Pelle.

More so that most have come from supposedly poorer leagues, but have stepped up when we have bought them. Large portions of the fan base complained when we bought most of them as they had "never heard of them". Being PL proven is one of the most absurd things when it comes to buying a player unless it's someone like Aguero, Hazard, De Bruyne etc.

I agree wholly...I liked that strategy. I'd like to get back to it, actually; if we want to get players 'above our station', it is the best route, though it's not without risk.

Carillo is meh. Seen him play a few times and he is average at best.

We definitely need a target man. Palace was the perfect example, with the weather and pitch conditions it was advantageous to go for the aerial option. They had Benteke and we didn’t. Easy to kick Pellegrino, but he didn’t have that option available to him.

Pelle was by no means a great striker, but he was a round peg in a round hole. Our team is set-up for a target man, but we haven’t had one in the team.

Not signing one in the summer was poor, but loaning out Gallagher was even poorer.
Everton have managed to find results playing Calvert-Lewin and I wouldn’t put him ahead of Gallagher as a player at present.

Gallagher is getting seriously, seriously overrated because of our scoring woes. He's not an ideal target man still, because he doesn't have the strength. He has also been anything but a consistent goalscorer in the Championship; I find it difficult to fathom that he'd be good for much beyond late-game subs at this stage.

Couldn't agree more, from what I've seen and heard Gallagher has just about found his level in the Championship?

Over the last 4 years we've had 2 or 3 really good players and padded the team out with decent players. Unfortunately we are now just left with just the padding. Not you, the manager, the owners or the board could have stopped those good players leaving. We will never be able to afford or attract a ready made star. We have to rely on the scouts (or black box) to find the next Mane (or 3 Manes). The number of blame threads on this forum makes me think Mourinho's in charge! Looking forward to us signing a couple of unknowns this month. Mo Salah started somewhere!

<applause> Well said, Sir

I have said ever since he made his debut for us against Arsenal, that I didn’t think Gallagher is or would be a Premier League striker. I really hoped he proved me wrong, but never believed he would. TSS also said this.

Anyone crying that we loaned him out really is living in a different footballing universe.

Who is overrating him?
It’s about having that type of option available in the squad and not going into a season with only three available strikers. It’s not about the individual components but how they best piece together

I've been in the same boat. Still think he could be the sort of player who eventually becomes a PL striker, but only after several years of learning his craft in the lower leagues. I'd happily sell him, and then cheer for him if he makes it.

Because we aren't going to carry three strikers on the bench, on most nights that just means that he's in civilian clothes. Getting the odd chance on the bench when someone's injured, and getting thrown on the pitch with 5-10 minutes left chasing a goal a handful of times a season.

It’s the “we should get Billy Sharp back” crew of old. Also known as “we should get Nigel back”.

Southampton are reportedly keen on an unlikely move for Barcelona attacker Jose Arnaiz.

According to a report from Spanish news outlet Diario Gol, Saints are among a host of clubs that are willing to cough up Arnaiz’s release clause, stated to be worth just £20 million.

The 22-year-old has only been at Barcelona for a number of months, with the young forward having joined the club from Real Valladolid in the summer transfer window.
Arnaiz is, without doubt, a hugely promising player. When he has been given the chance to impress in Barca’s first-team, namely in the Copa del Rey, he has delivered. It seems somewhat unlikely that the Catalan giants would be willing to part ways with such an impressive young player, but his release clause could be an attractive proposition for potential suitors.

The prospect can play on either flank and is also a competent forward, as he has shown by his impressive finishing for Barcelona B this season.

It would be a huge, if unlikely, coup for Saints if they were to secure Arnaiz’s services. However, they will face competition from Arsenaland Tottenham for his signature, if Diario Gol’s report is to be believed.

When you say “that type of option” are you meaning someone not good enough?

Whilst I do agree that Gallagher has not shown he is premier league material and I personally don't think he will become premier league.

However, having said that. Harry Kane scored 14 in 56 games in his lower league loan spells and never looked spectacular. Look how he turned out.

Gallagher has currently scored 15 in 75 games. Whilst not as good as Kane's it isn't too far away.

I doubt he will make it with us but never say never!!

I mean a player who can offer a focal point in the attack and can help push the team further up the pitch and potentially get Tadic and Boufal on the ball in more dangerous areas, someone to play alongside Gabbiadini in certain situations. An alternative style of player to what we have at present Who could help bring out better performances from those around him.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter now, I’m sure we will eventually get a new striker this window who will be better than Sam, but I think we left ourselves unnecessarily short of options for the first half of the season and especially over Xmas
