His display yesterday is just another reason why he should be in the England squad. I find it staggering that someone with his set piece ability is overlooked.

Because set piece ability isn't worth much from the bench?

I can only imagine the outrage directed towards Southgate if we need a goal in a World Cup semi final and he brought James Ward Prowse off the bench to save the day.

It's done with penalties, why not with free kicks? JWP is that good he's worth taking in the event we get a free kick 25-30 yards out.

Because you bring players on for a shoot out with like 5 mins left of the game as you know it’s going to penalties. Kind of hard to predict when you are going to get a free kick 25 yards out.

I actually think he should probably be in the squad, mostly due to his injury record and how fit he is, but he’d be 4th/5th choice so would barely see the field unless there were injuries or a meaningless group game

Because you know the penalties are coming and tend to only bring players on for a short period? Chances of getting a free kick left of centre to goal is much slimmer.

True, but you can have warming up with 10-15 mins to go. And if you get 5 subs it won't be hard to hold one back just in case.

Yes but chances are Southgate will have 5 subs available. If it was only 3 then yeah, ok, holding one back for a slim chance of a free kick isn't very smart. But with 5 you can afford to do that. It's such a good weapon to have I think Southgate will be foolhardy not to take him to Qatar.

So you mean if/when they get a free kick you sub him on, rather than just bringing him on in the hope you get one

Yep. I honestly think he's that good at free kicks it's worth using a space in the squad.

I was talking about bringing him on with the hope you get one. Are you suggesting bringing him on once one is awarded? That's baffling imo.

Whilst completely recognising his value to our team, and yesterday was a great example of this, our model is to sell players at their ceiling/highest value.

Id be amazed if JWP finished his career with us, and believe they will look at selling him if a suitable offer comes in. What that suitable offer to us is, I have no idea. But id imagine we start getting interested if an opening bid came in over £55 - £60m.

Id also have no issues with it, as it would support development of other areas of the team.

I am. With 5 subs available I think it's worth it. And TBH he's a good back up for Rice in the squad anyway.

Tbh, I don't believe he should be on the bench; I'd have him starting.

As I've said before I believe he offers something different to the rest of our midfielders much on a par to Beckham in that his set piece delivery can add another dimension to our play which I don't see from those currently in the team.

I'd like to see Mr Southgate play a midfield three of JWP, Bellingham and Rice. Not going to happen but that would surely have something exciting about it.

A brilliant '**** it, I'll do it myself' performance from JWP yesterday - just what we needed to help stop the floundering.

Na that is a low value, especially when you factor in transfer inflation of late.

Personally I don’t think we should consider it as he is very much a key player, but being realistic about it there is a reasonable chance of him moving this or next summer. If he is going we need to be looking at Van Dijk value and up.

Id say his value to us is even higher than that, pushing £100m for our most important player, long contract, who also just happens to be the best set piece taker in World Football at this moment in time (feels odd to type, but I don’t even think it’s much of a debate).

I do wonder if there have been certain assurances provided to JWP in return for a long contract though which could see him go cheaper than ideal.

Grealish would appear to be the sort of bench mark we should be looking at in terms of price I suppose. Grealish more attacking which usually adds more to the price and arguably a level above JWP, but essentially very similar in terms of what he meant for Villa and what JWP means for us.

Yeah fair point re value, id love it to be higher, and maybe it will be, but point remains, id be surprised if he were still here end of his contract.

Im not sure it will be north of VVD fee though, just feel that we need the cash, selling is our model (at a high price). Noticed Magic mentioned Jack Grealish, and dont believe for one moment we will get that fee - love to be proved wrong, even considering JWPs goal contributions this season. I mean, maybe after the season he has just had, maybe he has just added another £15-20m on to his tag, and agree with the certain assurances provided, that was my feeling too.

We will always need the money, but there is a price that we NEED the money.

    What I mean is say £30m it's a no, £45m hmm interesting, £70m + ok then.

We need the £30m but it is not worth losing him for that cheap. If you see what I mean.

Villa didn't want to sell Grealish, and didn't 'need' the money, but at £100m they could afford to spunk away ⅓ of that on Ings <laugh>

So he's going nowhere then. Which is good.

JWP is more than just a free kick specialist for Saints, he's the 1st player on the teamsheet, team captain and to me, he's the heartbeat of the team. I honestly think, just like Le Tiss he has no desire to play anywhere else, and will stay with Saints for his whole career.
I certainly hope this will be the case.
