Newcastle United are understood to have passed on the offer to sign Jack Rodwell.

Rodwell has signed for Sunderland on a five year contract and will pick up wages of around £64,000 per week and a significant signing on fee.

But Newcastle, like the Wearsiders, were offered the player by Manchester City earlier this summer and turned down the move.

Rodwell’s wage demands would have made him one of the top earners at United and he was also offered to Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and West Ham who all opted against signing the former Everton man.

Rodwell had cost City around £12million from the Toffees two years ago but he made just 16 appearances scoring twice in the Premier League. And that was considered too much of a gamble by a clutch of Prem clubs.

Rodwell had been dogged by hamstring injuries during his time at Man City but will start afresh on Wearside. Sunderland have paid a £10million fee for his services.

Not sure where there sources are from mind but believe that would put him as highest paid player?

Who gives a **** anyway, if they prefer Colback to Rodwell, then I'm cool with that.

Probs means they'll pass on signing Messi and get Charlie Adam at some point too.

Adam Johnson is on about 70k isn't he?

Seeing as a large number of the lads on here are season card holders, I doubt that.

Unless, of course, SAFC stage behind closed doors games just for you, in which case fair one...

The last 10 year's I would easy win hands down & if I'm being honest only Raw would give me a run for my money. I will beat him on away games tho.

I only get away games 3-4 max a year now, but I think a few of the lads do.

Haven't seen us win an away game, bar the derbies, for about 5 years man, **** sake.

Just trying to work it out and I think it was Spurs 2-1, Ricco & Cisse. ****ing hell man...

Congratulations. Well done. I missed 3 home games the season my daughter was born. Can't afford away games but if I could I would he at every one regardless of who plays for us and who we sign. I renewed my card the day they came out. Regardless of division. But you must be a truer fan than me as you support the club only based on conditions.

Who has offered to meet me? I gived people my home address & nobody showed up. ask billy if you want. I'll be at the Betis game on Thursday pop along if you like.

Working in Cumbria all week baz. A few have offered and been to Hastings hill and you have threatened numerous (me included) fans on here. You openly stated you would only buy your season card if we signed players of the quality you wanted. I bought my card when they went on sale. Regardless of division, manager, owner or players I got mine. You've attached conditions to yours. Says everything I need to know about you

Aye it was ricco with a class goal & cisse with a headed under Roy keane. last summer I only had the winning away feeling once & that was Man united in the cup.

But, soft! What light through yonder window breaks? It is the East and Jack is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious magpie, who is already sick and pale with grief, that Gus's plan art far more fair than his.

Shakespeare agrees.

Trust me they were talking rubbish. I said this summer I wont buy one till I knew what type of player is coming in. I'm still unsure about renewing but I will still go to games. I may start going to more away games who knows.

You got your opinion about me & I got my opinion about you. thats life music boy.
