I thought prostitution was illegal, but it's not illegal to be a prostitute? In the same way as it's not illegal to be a burglar.

Prostitution isn't illegal.

It's not illegal to be anything, it's the act that is illegal otherwise people would get charged because of one offence ad finitum.

I think we're saying the same thing.

The act isn't illegal, it's only illegal to solicit yourself on a street or work from a brothel. Paying or receiving payment for sex is 100% legal.

I said: “Prostitution isn't illegal.”

Then, in response to Dutch_Mountain_Dog, who said: “I thought prostitution was illegal, but it's not illegal to be a prostitute? In the same way as it's not illegal to be a burglar.”

I said: “It's not illegal to be anything, it's the act that is illegal otherwise people would get charged because of one offence ad finitum.”

So, in response to you saying: “The act isn't illegal, it's only illegal to solicit yourself on a street or work from a brothel. Paying or receiving payment for sex is 100% legal.”

Obviously, I know the act of prostitution isn’t illegal because I said prostitution isn’t illegal.

I was making a broader point in response to Dutch’s comment. Being something (not just a prostitute) couldn’t be illegal – unless you made some kind of lifetime commitment to abstain – because you would constantly be under the threat of arrest for being a prostitute, burglar, thief, murderer, etc. rather than only after you commit an offence and before being dealt with.

I hope that’s cleared up any confusion!

The offence of "living off immoral earnings" is also illegal. This doesn't apply to the prostitutes themselves though although the name of the offence could cause confusion.

I went to Davos on holiday in 1967. The teachers in Leo Shultz wouldn't believe that a kid from NHE would go ever go there. My Dad was a train driver and we traveled free. 27hrs on 6 different trains and one ferry. My parents visited every canton over the years. Different world to Hull.

I'm boycotting this thread, it's taking me to a place I don't want to go to!

Seriously? This has absolutly nothing to do with black people. The image relates to the term "black sheep", which means people who do not obey the laws. Obviously the party who started this campain, which was about deporting criminal foreigners, wanted to provoke, the campain was highly controversial. I voted against it though, I thought it was mostly bullshit. Yes, in Switzerland we are able to vote about laws... A campain of a very specific, right-winged party, does not in any shape or form reflect a whole country... Just to get this out of the way...

Thanks for bringing the article to our attention - though you did take some of the sting out of our Nick's words. That actually means "Hull is known for being Ugly." unless my German isn't quite as good as I thought it was.

No, you're right. As I pointed out in a later comment, my translation was not flawless. He actually meant that Hull's ugly.

In England, pretty much everything is racist. It doesn't matter about the context or intentions of the person saying something, someone will always make out it was a hate crime.
