Thatcher was a great primeminster. She rescued this country from oblivion with Britain the laughing stock of Europe. Strikes everywhere and the unions effectively running the country. The dead not buried, rubbish left uncollected in the street, and people sitting at home in the dark with no electricity. That's what Thatcher inherited. She made this country great again in just a decade and we are still reaping the rewards of what's she done today despite Labour's best efforts to bankrupt us again. She needed to get to grips with the unions. It is what the country wanted. You can't have a government held to ransom by scum like Scargill. Scargill wasn't interested in the miners. He wanted to push his own extreme socialist agenda and maintain the power of the unions. He couldn't give a toss about the miners. As striking miners suffered, he used to drive around the various pits in his jag. Thatcher was right. The mines were no longer profitable. All Thatcher wanted was an exit plan to start to wind it down. It's the unions who refused to negotiate or discuss that turned it into an all or nothing. Coal mining is not a job for the 21st century in a high tech westernised economy. Would you still send children up to sweep chimneys?
