See you are flying into Chania. A bit of a trek from Gouves but this classic scene was filmed near Chania,

Went to Chania pre-covid. Parked in the town then walked to the sea and rounded a big building on the west corner of the old port. You don't see it until you get round the corner, then you see it all at once. I was gobsmacked, stunning.

I'm heading out there for two weeks on Saturday - I'll check it out.

I've got approximately 10 more years until retirement now, dependent on investments, and the aim is to spend most of it out there or on another island and buy a Sigma 36 to visit other places.

If my children settle down and have children in their 20s/early 30s, there's a good chance I'll have to get a divorce to complete this aim, as my wife won't go.

Approaching the end of my stay at the Sani Resort in Greece, it’s called a resort, but it’s effectively a gated privately owned town.

I’ve been to many places, but nowhere quite like this. There are five hotels (though only one is actually a hotel in the traditional sense, the other four are actually villas and apartments, each built around a central clubhouse).

Each hotel has its own pools and restaurants, but you can use any of them (apart from the pools in the poshest one) and there’s 29 bars and restaurants in total (the best of the restaurants are around the fantastic marina).

There’s a tennis school run by Rafa Nadal, a football school run by Chelsea and a survival school run by Bear Grylls, there’s even a synchronised swimming school taught by one of the national team.

I’d recommend it to anyone, particularly people with children/ grandchildren, though it’s maybe one for a special occasion, it’s not cheap.

To be honest, I’ve no idea why anyone would come to a place like this and then disappear into a pine forest to learn how to trap animals and the like, but apparently they do.

Went to Spinalonga a couple of years ago after reading a couple of books about it.
Arrived first thing in the morning and it was so quiet and very atmospheric. An hour later the place was over run with tourists and didn’t feel the same. I was so glad l went so early.

Not quite as big (when we went anyway) but went somewhere similar in St Vincent and Grenadines a few years ago.
They had a Pat Cash tennis academy and a Liverpool FC football school (in fact their youth team were there when we were)
More a village than a town then, although it was growing I believe.
Very pleasant and excellent food and drink (only had one bottle of Laphroig behind the sunset bar though…thankfully they put it away in a cupboard and only brought it out for me <cheers>)

Following great recommendations from 606 Trip Advisor last year, which lead to a lovely holiday in Ibiza we are looking at 7/10 days away early September. It is to celebrate Mrs A’s (flexible) retirement. She does have some mobility issues, so we are looking at an All inclusive beachfront hotel but which is also accessible to a town.
We have stumbled across one in Crete which is AI (not artificial intelligence), on the beach and is 20 minute (regular) bus trip to Chania. It sounds lovely and ticks every box. We would both be more than happy with this and likely to book by the weekend.
However, I need to see if anyone on 606 Trip Advisor has any other ideas, as would prefer to go a different island we haven’t previously been to, which ticks same boxes.

Visited last year, very interesting place.

I think I may have posted this previously but ,due to choppy waters, getting back on the boat from those little stoney plinths was a challenge.

    The SBS would have struggled.

Yes, a few, particularly staying in the Marina. Quite a lot of Arabs in there as well. Very few Brits.

I try to stay clear of Russians when on holiday, mainly due to them being obnoxious arseholes.

    Generally speaking.

Something went a little pair shaped at work today and I thought **** it, I'll go back to Sani for a week, but the cost difference during school holidays is bonkers.

Going to have to have a rethink.
