Read something the other day. Passengers were complaining that because cruise ships were so big these days it took so long to disembark/re-embark passengers at stopovers that they often got no more than an hour or 2 in the different ports.[/QUOTE
I’ve only done one cruise and that was with Marella tui, Not the biggest of cruise ships and just your typical holiday maker. At stop over ports some did full day trips others did there own thing but we were always in port for around ten hours. I don’t know about some of the much bigger cruise ships though. We just enjoyed it all because there was so much variety on at different bars/ eating places ect. Has I say you either like them or you don’t but we really enjoyed it , I have a couple of mates who have also done Marella to different places and they had a great time. It’s probably with me going with my daughter and seeing different countries ect suited her because I’m sure if she had been stuck on a beech with me all day then she would have been bored sick with me.

Nah, my reverse mooring of the boat is far better than my reverse parking of my car, could be because a boat doesn't steer in reverse! Been on the Norfolk Broads three times (innuendo optional) and hopefully will be back. :emoticon-0125-mmm:

For scale, Titanic was 269 metres long, 28 metres wide with a capacity of 3320 people. The Pride of Hull North Sea Ferry is 215m long 32 m wide and has a passenger capacity of 1360 people.

Ah, but the Titanic only had one car onboard. :emoticon-0125-mmm:

I'd like to see the ferry boat dodge icebergs in the North Atlantic

MSC Virtuosa is one of the biggest ships (I’ve read third biggest and 15th, so must depend how you measure it). It is 330 m in length Still able to turn on a sixpence due to side thrusters. It had 6,000 passengers and 1800 crew……. Oh and 30 seats.

I think the opposite instead, each day you go off the ship and are in totally different ports visiting totally different areas.

The theory is good and if the ship moors in a port on each stop, it's probably fine. But having seen a few of those Massive Cruise Ships programmes, it looks like many ports the ships have to moor in a harbour and ferry the passengers on and off over ever several hours in small boats (usually to go on pre-arranged excursions), which looks like my idea of hell.

L'enfer, c'est les autres as Sartre famously said, so I'm with you on this.

Try to relax in a place where your holiday is anything but...

Agreed, though you can go outside just not out the garden. Also, you’d struggle to get the hotel down the fjords.
We tried it because Mrs A has mobility issues (caused by chemo). Until her illness in 2021 we both really enjoyed travelling. We thought it could be the way forward, so really disappointed that we didn’t enjoy it.
That's a real shame that things didn't pan out as expected.I'd always fancied the idea of a cruise but my Mrs was dead against it,I guess she appears to be right...That in itself is a minor miracle:emoticon-0100-smile

Certainly wasn’t our experience

To be fair, we spoke to some experienced cruisers who were trying to reassure is it isn’t usually like that. They did seem very short staffed. Where are you going?
We did ask for a table for two, and ended up on one for six. To be honest, the first night was chaos. It was very slow service, our water was serving two tables (normally it’s two waiters for one table). He was apologetic afterwards and explained that the other table ordered all four starters and two choices for mains. The food wasn’t fantastic either, so we went for the buffet option most of the week.
… and to cap it all, just tested positive for Covid! Only came back Friday and been nowhere since so almost certainly got it while cruising. I looked on the fb group for the cruise and it seems hundreds have it. Not surprising. And because they are short staffed, I’m sure many of the crew will carry on working.
