I've had a go at our MD enough times, this type of behaviour is normal. The press can be a useful tool to get the owner to listen I'd imagine.

Dick is quoted as saying "The last line [the defence] has to improve.. “We put them together this morning [in training] and the co-operation on some set pieces was very poor. Instead of watching the ball and the man, sometimes they were sleeping and you don’t know why"
I've read that Pulis drills his defence relentlessly and Pellegrini the same.
Rather than complaining to the press Dick should have the back 4 practising together all day long till they get it right. That's his job FFS.
To me he's getting all his excuses in before he walks away.

Dick is more or less saying Ellis is the problem, surely Ellis must know the squad is not good enough to survive, De Guzman has turned us down probably because he knows he will be in a relegation fight and Dick may walk. Ellis wants to be careful cos if Dick walks maybe no other manager would come in the circumstances.

Well that's a worry, I suppose all we can do is watch the club sleepwalk towards another season of our usual toil and heartache. Unless we sign 3 players of course, But then it's only really a fighting chance of staying up due to what could be a more damaging summer than Di Fanti's folly

We have failed in the market, no question, but Lens & M'Vila are next level signings, Lomberts and Fer would have been to varying degrees also.
Dick personally must have agreed with contract renewals and as such has his share of responsibility for tying up wage budget, my thoughts on the Wickham contract and sale was that we gave the deal with every intention of selling and recouping some money, he'd have been half price max via tribunal.

The whole premier league is going to collapse in on itself, with the amount of money being thrown around nowadays - where does it end? We've seen Leeds fail, Portsmouth, Wolves, Blackburn all fall down to administration and the brink of collapse. I think Ellis is trying his best to get Sunderland back into the black and has this clubs best intentions at heart. However, every other club is spending spending spending, and when you're tightening the purse strings, you're being left behind. Which means relegation, less money coming in (ty Sky) and the mighty fall. Leeds chanced it over a decade ago, and they're still ****ed.
The amount of money spent on ****e in the last 10 years is staggering. Bob never spent (credit to him, he gave us the AoL and SoL) and when Ellis came in, the Oligarchs and Sheiks were already using the EPL as their play thing. The newly promoted teams have nothing to lose - spend and hope for another season in the EPL, or go down, cut your losses and live off the parachute payments and try to get back up. We're in the unenviable position of having spent a **** tonne of cash to solidify our position, and are now struggling to get out of it after being a yo-yo club for so long. Do we keep spending everything and get deeper into the red? Do we cut right back to get out quicker and get in line with FFP? Seems we're the only club trying tbh.
Ellis is at the tight arse end of the spectrum. He's been propping us up for years, and been let down by managers like Bruce, MoN, and Di Fanti. He's been stung. I'd not let any one touch my money if it was mine. What he needs to realise is that I honestly think in Dick and to an extent Congers, we have a winning formula. Spend money on assets to the club, that can appreciate instead of mercs after a final payday. Lens is a solid choice. That's one down. Mvilla looks the goods. 2 down. Matthews, Kaboul, Coates... squad fillers. We need young, hungry, and players with a PROVEN potential ability. Go for that turkish lad, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, he CAN be sold for profit. And will help the team. Get in De Guzman. Get in Davy Propper. Get in a striker who will get goals, and is YOUNG. That's been a major downfall for us. Getting in old players who can help fill a gap right then and there... JoS, Brown, and Defoe. But none of them are worth anything.
There needs to be a bit of give and take from the DoF, Manager and Chairman. All are at different ends of the spectrum, and need to meet in the middle. They just need to hurry up... we're losing time fast.

It's a simple fact that some players don't want to join us due to location.
Add into the fact that there's clearly some discontent from Dick (who's only staying a year) & this 'culture within the club' that people keep bleating on about. Fact is we're probably not the most attractive club at the moment with the media furore as well.
Stick those 2 players you mentioned in the team and it'd be a different matter completely - it's not Short's fault they failed their medicals ffs.

Unless it was a bad injury i think we should renew our interest in Fer if De guzman turns us down. If he was fit within the next few weeks that is. He has played alot of games over the last few years. Many more than Brown or Fletcher i bet...
I agree with you on this statement, but I can never understand it. These guys earn mega money, not as if they have to live in Pallion, or Ryhope or Houghton etc etc, they could pretty much live anywhere...There is an airport on the doorstep and London is a mere 50 minutes away. In the NFL in America, Green Bay is hardly what you would call the number one place to live in the States, Freezing cold, miles from anywhere, sod all to do yet player want to play for this team. My first question would be do you want to play in the Premier league for Sunderland...if not, goodbye on to the next one, whats the point is signing a player if his heart is not in it.
I reckon it's more of the susceptibility to injury that did it. Add that into the fact he wasn't fit we said no and moved on.
The thing is nowadays it mainly isnt the players... is the cum buckets they cart around with them that want to be close to the shops, direct flights to Milan, and where the paps are always out preying on orange, make up caked slags who want their name and pics in the Daily Fail. Most players need to grow a set of balls, tell the ****in bints to put up and shut up. Playing is more important than the latest $1000 faded jeans from Diesel. Roy Keane was right in saying that the real men are slowly dying from Football, and being replaced by a bunch of soft cocks.
Relegation will cost more than the cost of surviving. That is the bottom line as far as I'm concerned. Its easier to sort out the finances when you are in the league with all the money.

I think there's quite a few people who've worked themselves up over spending money because they refuse to acknowledge facts.

Your losses are consistent and you cannot afford to continue to make huge losses every season, the model is completely unsustainable. Other clubs that are making that scale of loss, such as Fulham and Cardiff, both relegated. Villa very nearly were relegated like yourselves but they've managed to acquire a bit of cash over the summer from selling players and their owner is also trying to put them in the shop window, by all accounts.
You're one of the last clubs to attempt to get into line with FFP and now you're seeing maybe, how harsh things have to be in order to save your club's bacon.
Future money is only guaranteed if you stay in this league. Your owner faces a dilemma, if he spends small and you go down maybe he can recover with minimum investment, if he spends big and you go down, it could carry unthinkable consequences.
Almost every owner will have to play the bad guy at one stage, to secure the long term future of his asset, it's just Ellis Short's turn.
