If that is the back page, that injury at WBA has really affected Toby (turned his hair long and red for a start) .
Fascist rag. He's sticking to his guns, though. Hopefully the Scousers see this and publicly back him. Liverpool fans supporting an Everton legend would be a great two-fingered gesture.
Oddly, they and their supporters are doing their utmost to prove him right. Right or wrong on the issue, I'm not sure that it matters more than the ridiculous response, he said it was showing us as heartless, which perfectly describes the response of those abusing him and calling for his sacking. Having invented the capability of mass communication, it appears that we should have stayed isolated from each other, as we cannot be trusted to be tolerant and understanding enough to use it without breaking into childish arguments that would shame a 5 year old. I won't Twitter, as every time I would go to write something, I would hear the Dave Gorman 'Found Poem' music playing in my head.
A lot of people are becoming increasingly resistant to hearing differing opinions, preferring to hide in their own little bubbles. When they're confronted with someone that doesn't agree with them they find it jarring and painful. It's the safe space concept taken to a ludicrous extreme. The idea of seeing both sides of the argument and putting yourself in another's shoes are being lost. Political lines are being drawn with increasing harshness and compromise makes politicians traitors now, especially in the US. The media are pitting people against each other for ratings and their owners' own divisive reasons.
It's very worrying how intolerant we are becoming. Maybe we are a small pack animal. When most people were exposed to family, work colleagues and the locals in the pub, we seemed to be able to discuss things reasonably face-to-face even when you fundamentally disagreed with someone. Hiding behind nom-de-text's and having the whole world out there allows people to declare unilateral hostilities on those who don't share their views in insulting and threatening terms.
I think that we're being lead towards intolerance by the media. We've been moving away from this bullshit for decades, but there's been a resurgence of this nonsense from crap papers in recent years. Dubious websites that offer unchallenged assertions haven't helped, either.
It's also been pointed out that the "migrant" that The Sun splashed all over their front page as "proof" that the migrants aren't children isn't even a migrant - but a translator. But apart from that their evidence is solid!
I don't think that this has been established, actually. He's not a government translator, but it's not clear if he's one of the supposed children, either. Official sources aren't clearing it up.
It's disturbing how migrants are so readily demonised for simply being migrants. The willingness of the authorities to view them as premeditated, sophisticated lawbreakers rather than desperate, vulnerable human beings gives licence to the racists, bigots and assorted nasties to spew their bile and stir up hatred. History tells us that this kind of hatred can lead to the inhumane treatment of such people and even atrocities. The irony is that many of those who will share the Sun's attitudes towards migrants will wear poppies very soon without a hint of irony and without understanding that the point of doing so is to remember to heed the warnings of the past re bigotry and prejudice so that history isn't repeated.
I'm all for helping these people out when theyre in need, but protecting the safety of the country has to also be of paramount importance. If a boat/train/bus load of people are arriving from countries which are known fkr having hih concentrations of terrorists, and if those people are presented as children, but are in fact all clearly in their 20s and 30s, then it is abundantly clear that insufficient checks are being undertaken to protect those already here in these Isles.
The Guardian that always publishes a match review of each PL game has for some reason left Bournemouth v Spurs out. Why?
Except that most of the terrorism in the UK, and France for that matter, has come from people who have grown up in the UK & France. The source of terrorism is 35 years of neoliberalism and American foreign policy supported by the UK since the 2nd World War. Most of the immigrants are trying to escape from the mess we have created with these policies. The UK is sliding towards fascism and that is not an extreme angry rant, just an observation. Using the argument that a country is judged by how it treats it's poor and disadvantaged the UK comes out very badly. The direction in Scotland is the polar opposite in almost every way. The break up of the UK cannot come soon enough for ALL it's component parts.
Because The Grauniad's football coverage is piss poor. In fact it's got even worse this season, as the Monday edition reduced the majority of that weekend's Premier League games to a tiny summary.
Two things you can set your watches by: the clocks going back at the end of October, and Poch being linked to a job where the incumbent manager is floundering. Yup, that's as much credence as I'm giving to his being linked to the Los Ladrones job - mainly because I doubt that Florentino Perez would be happy to pay Bale's release clause and 75% of his wages for the next five years...
