That's all that's required for a paper like The Sun to 'confirm' he's leaving though...

All of this "The club have control" vs "Can't stop players from going" is killing me.

In any endeavor, you are presented with obstacles. The Fonte situation is definitely one of them.

We absolutely, 100% can keep Fonte. We also have the ability to raise his salary well above the 75k we are purportedly offering. Or we could sell him.

Beyond that, I suspect the club have a Plan B if Fonte leaves. But Plan B is not as good as Plan A. That is why it is Plan B.

So there are many options. And yet none of them are particularly appealing options and they are all fraught with risk.

I mean, I don't know. The club has done a fantastic job, but they are a hairbreadth away from a **** season. That's life in one of the most competitive leagues in the world on a shoe string budget compared to the big clubs.

If it weren't really hard to to get it right, it wouldn't be so awesome when we do it.

I thought Fonte was already on £85k?

Claude: "José is an important player for the team but also for the fans because they like José and they like the personality of José and his work with Southampton is not finished because we've got good opportunities for the European Cup and the Premier League and for me, it's very important to keep José. And he's okay with this. He had a good discussion with the director and the chairman and now, all is okay. The fans can be happy because José is staying."
