Surely you're not that naive. How many times have we been told something that hasn't materialised? <laugh> I don't want it written in blood, I would maybe like Fonte to sign a new contract or address the fans.

Fantastic news! Though I'm not counting any chickens till the window has shut.

I expect a new contract not long after too.

I think it may be a curse of being a Saints fan, but my reaction to this was 'okay, but I guess that puts him top of the list of those to leave at the end of next season......like Morgan and Wanyama did after staying the extra year'

That won't be a problem for me. I think this could be his last premium year, if he can sustain performance. From then on, I think he'll be of less importnCe and we'll be bringing someone in or through.

Edit: whilst still using Jose and developing him as a coach.

    'NEW DEAL FOR FONTE'

Jose Fonte will sign a new contract with Southampton, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Portugal centre-back, who had been linked with a move to Manchester United, will reportedly see his wage rise from £45,000 a week to £75,000.

i thought he was on more than that....

I was purely on about the 45k a week thing? I thought it was pretty common knowledge that his last new deal took him well above that? Happy to be corrected if you know better though? (Which you may well do!)

As for him staying I've already said I'm not counting any chickens until the window is shut <ok>

    Sorry I misread it <doh> <laugh>

    Either way... mirror... mail <whistle>

Also having re-read should have made it clear I was on about the wage part and was agreeing with your last line.

Yeah that was my thoughts <laugh>

As I just said to Richie when I re-read I realised I should have made it clearer what I was referring to.

Here's a sort of back-up to your Daily Mirror. The Daily Express. Second in line only to the DM, but anyway, here it is. The article is mainly about Sofiane Boufal but mentions Jose. Puel says...

"His work with Southampton is not finished,” said Puel of Fonte. “There are good opportunities in Europe and the Premier League and for me it’s very important to keep Jose. He’s OK with this. He had a good discussion with the director, the chairman and now it’s OK. The fans can be happy because Jose’s staying.”

Full credit to the board if this ends happily. I wanted him kept to prove a point, not that e's indispensible or vital but that we don't have to sell key players. If he's happy to stay then I am sure he will be a club legend forever. He can be proud of the loyalty he's shown if it works out that way. He's been bloody well rewarded for it in recent years and talk of a last big payday for him is nonsense to my ears, every week is a big payday for these guys, they should never worry for their financial future without needing to be mercenary about things.

    Happy news.

Wonder if he got a word in edge ways <laugh>
