You might like Fenne Lily, John. Reminds me a little of Joni Mitchell, and an excellent singer-songwriter. I’ve just managed to get tix for the last of her four sold out gigs in London. Three albums so far, and I don’t think a single duff song.
Off to see Leah Weller (Paul’s daughter) at the 100 Club on Friday, with the Tearaways supporting with Clem Burke on drums.
No worries. Hopefully a new find for you. I just heard that song on 6 music earlier this year and now I’m a fan.
Well that was a fun night out. It was like being at a mod family gathering! Leah Weller (Paul’s daughter) singing Mac Weller (Paul’s son) on keyboards Steve Craddock (Ocean Colour Scene / Paul Weller band) on guitar Cas Craddock (Steve Craddock’s son) also on guitar Paul Weller in the audience Steve Craddock’s wife in the audience. Etc Good night at the 100 Club. Prefer the funkier stuff to the slow stuff personally, but that’s taste. Bassist was someone I don’t know, but am going to find out about as he was outstanding. Also played were the Tearaways. Good fun for a 40 year old band (so they’re all a lot older) playing Californian pub rock. Slick though and entertaining, probabaly made better by having Clem Burke playing with them now who must be one of the best, and yet underrated, drummers ever
Billy Bragg review for @Sir Cheshire Ben Stood two people back from the front No support but a film from early 80’s to now shown. He’ll come in in a bit I assume. ****ing heartbreaking that the problems being sung about 40 years ago are still problems now Join a Union and get active
Update WHAT A ****ING GIG!!! 2 hours of joyous activism and fun, followed by an encore of the entire Life’s a Riot album!!! ****ing brilliant
Didn't realise they still existed. I remember inadvertently seeing them in the 90s at Room on George Street. Horrendous band.
Certainly is, and still as decent & passionate as ever. Seen him a few times in recent years (and back in the day) Film was excellent. 40 minutes of him through the years. Good watch. Powerful bits (including him confronting a BNP candidate until the racist got back in his car and ****ed off) and some really funny bits. Gig was him occasionally joined by a second guitarist/steel guitarist and a keyboard player. 2 hours non stop (well with some worthwhile chatting between songs) Then came back on on his own and played the entire ‘Life’s a riot, with Spy v Spy’ album (all 16 minutes of it ) as an encore. Didn’t do it in order though, so he could finish with A New England. Whole thing was a joy Slight side note. It was rammed (O2 academy…the old Leeds Town & Country Club) and we got there early to find a mile long (well…you know what I mean) queue right round the venue, across a road and heading up to the university. Realised later, but early enough to be useful, that they have a priority queue for O2 customers with the app. Mrs Tash already had that so we were whisked in rather than stay in the queue. Worth knowing if you are going to a gig there.
Last time I saw him he updated lyrics to be more relevant to the day. Same issues, different times. Leeds T&C was a great venue. Not been since the mid 90s. Fantastic lyricist both politically & otherwise.
Apparently, it was a night in Hull that saved the fledgling career of Take That... https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001sxby/reel-stories-take-that
