Saw about half of them on that list. Can’t believe a great group like Taste were that cheap. Jimmy James and The Vagabonds were always good value for money.
As a 14 year old used to go case carrying on a Saturday at Butlins. Used to average £8- £12 for about 5-6 hours. Saw the Stones for 6s 6d. and Little Richard for 10 shillings A total of 82.5 p. Or just a few minutes work. It was a rude awakening to start work living away from home 3 years later for £6.50 a week.

Just checked my copy of the booklet. The band was paid £1000 in the 1970 gig. About 2000 attended that evening. I made the '70 edition. Couldn't get a ticket for the '06 reunion job at the Union. Didn't bands then lose money touring, and it was a cost for promoting the sales of the music and growing the fanbase.. other way round now. A poster on the deceased CI forum, who lurks here, was shagging the lead singer of a Brit pop band called sleeper in the mid 90s, and I drove up to Hull to watch the concert with him at the Adelphi - she was complaining at afterdrinks that she was being billed to perform by her management (appreciate her band werent comparable to pink Floyd, ha)
Not necessarily. I used to know the person involved in booking acts at Brid Spa. Don’t know what they were paid first time I saw the Stones on Cup Final Day in 1964 but a couple of months later they came back after their first no 1 single and he reckoned they were paid £1250. The Spa held 4,500 for that, down from 5,000 for their first visit which saw chaos. The price was 10 shillings, up from 6s 6d for the first one. So with 4,500 paying 10 shilling, £2250, plus profits from the bars and cafe it was a good night for the council who own the Spa as well as the Stones.
I just saw a post on Facebook about Joy Division's first London gig in 1978, barely anyone turned up and they were only on door money and were paid £27.50, it had cost them £28.50 in travel costs.
Saw Peter Kay in Sheff on Friday, whilst some content was predictable, get to see him if you have a chance, a night full of laughs and good entertainment.
Didn’t realise East Riding Council owned the Stones. They owned me too, until I retired. Edit: maybe not ERYC in 1964
Brid Spa was built by the town council. And was still, as far as I know, under the control of the town council in 1964 and beyond. When it came under the control of the ERYC I don’t know. I do know they lost the best bookings manager they have had for a long time, a bloke from Hull, as ERYC wanted him to take a large pay cut.
Don’t know to be honest. I know someone in the Town Hall. Will try to remember to ask him next time I see him.
There was a similar story recently under ERYC.The General Manager there oversaw the recent renovations, and was very highly thought of. The staff there including him were subject to a pay restructure, and subsequently a drop in salary. Needless to stay he didn’t hang around long. Is that the fella you know or is this another? addendum: the renovations were completed in 2009
The bloke I know works in the town hall. I think the bloke you are referring to was the one I mentioned from Hull. They wanted him to take a pay cut of around £4,000. He was indeed highly thought of. Did a good job with bookings maximising the use of the Spa year round.
Off to see him in Lincoln in April. First time I’ve been to Engine Shed so we’re stopping over for a couple of days. Looks like I’ll be seeing him again now!
