Yep. Just saying on another thread, I retire this week (using my leave up now). No debts nor mortgage, good pension, a little nest egg. Got used to taking home, after tax, £50k a year on top of my pension - but the shifts, at my age (61) were just killers, even if the work was not too bad when I got there. But seven 12-hour shifts on the bounce, getting up at 4,30am, is too much for an old guy, and even if I did only have to work 17 days in 35, I thought EXACTLY what you put about working like a dog till 70, as my old feller did, and died of liver cancer a month before he was due to retire. And on the subject of dogs, that's the trigger point - my 12-year old lab is riddled with arthritis and other ailments - his poor face when I went out to work and he knew he wouldn't see me for 13 hours was heartbreaking.
BUT - is there ever a good time to give up that money? My daughter was just got her new energy bill (Scottish Power). Gone up from £105 pcm to £275. I'm with Ovo - I haven't got my bill yet. But I can see that nest egg dwindling soon. May have to get a job at Tesco stacking shelves, 'suppose, though the reason I worked on after drawing my pension was to avoid that. That said, on a broader point, I'm sure there's many now in my daughter's situation (and mine), and I shudder to think what will happen to the economy. And that brings it back to where we started - is there ever a good time to get off the money-go-round? You can always find a reason not to.

As long as you’ve got enough to pay the bills and aren’t stressing about money, that’s enough for me really.
People choose lifestyles where they end up needing to earn £50-£60k per year to pay for all the **** they buy on credit, massive mortgages, a new car every 2-3 years monthly subscriptions, and on and on it goes and they just get trapped in that way of living until they drop

My state pension age was raised from 65 to 66.5 about five years ago (not that I'll notice, as I take a level finally salary pension anyway). My daughter (26) is looking at 68, though I'm sure that will rise as she approaches it. And that's the point - us at the *** end of the Baby Boomers are having a little shock, but basically, it's you and my daughter's generation that are paying the full whack. And your pensions will be ****e too.
Indeed. Learned judo in my teens, and it's served me well. The one bar fight I was in in the 80's (Magaluf), and there wasn't room for high kicks and swinging punches anyway. And I learned how to fall without injuring myself too much - great skill when you fought like me.
I don't even have a pension mate but yeah given the way the age is rising and that we'll be paying for this pandemic for years then I don't expect to ever retire.

I have a 29 year old god daughter who works in the nhs ( Southampton General Hospital ) .
She has bought a flat , but only because it was her grandmothers and her mum and dad have been kind …
I also have a 12 year old niece and 11 year old Nephew , I genuinely worry for their future !

It's what keeps me in my current job. 28 years for full pension equal to my highest three earning years (adjusted up for future inflation). It would take a lot before I jumped ship with that reward at the end of the tunnel.
I'm already 10 years in... So just 18 years and I can retire without taking a dip in lifestyle. (I'll probably work a few years after that though, something easy, so I get more from Social Security too).

The two times judo has rewarded me were both pretty identical situations. Running through the woods tripped in a tree root and sort of instinctively fell into a forward roll and back to my feet- like we would practice at the start of each lesson (minus the tree roots)... I guess muscle memory... Smooth as hell...
. Of course the second time it happened I stumbled into a tree after rolling back to my feet... Thankfully no one around to see it.
