This is why I do what I do, selling vegan **** to hippies from the back of my camper van. I had a career, nice salary, pension, and all the perks and status that come with a senior management job. But when my daughter came along and I was only seeing her for an hour a day in the mornings and I was looking at my colleagues 15-20 years older than me starting to burn out, I thought 'You know what, **** it, this isn't any life I want to be doing until I'm 65'
I think lots of people buy into that mentality that they've got to work like a dog until they are nearly 70 (and let's be honest, that's what we're told we have to do) then they can retire, relax and enjoy themselves. Trouble is, a fair proportion of those people are too old or unwell by that stage to go galavanting off on a trip around the world and they realise they should have done it 20 years ago.
I earn a fraction of what I did when I had my career, but I get to pick my daughter up from school every day, go to her school plays and I've got time to go surfing, biking, camping etc and I'm pretty much free to decide when I want to work and when I want time for myself and my family. There's no way I'd go back to a full time 9-5 job again, not for any money. I guess it all depends on how you measure your wealth.
