First of many i'm afraid though as i've said before the idea we can have 100+ fully pro clubs is ridiculous imo as it just wasn't sustainable as their isn't the available finance to support them all and unfortunately the pandemic has just exacerbated that.

Below the Championship clubs largely operate within their means, but are obviously much more reliant on match day revenue than TV cash. @brb ‘s man Paul Scully was on TS yesterday spelling out the financial crisis they currently face without fans. He reckons they collectively need £2-300m from somewhere to see them through. He suggested this needs to come from either the Govt or via the PL obtaining loaned funds on their behalf that could be structured to be repaid over a long term basis.

It’s the Championship clubs who are at most long term risk according to Scully as they collectively run at a collective loss of circa £400m per season (pre COVID) as owners gamble on chasing the pot of gold that is the PL.

In our last accounts (2018/19) we had a turnover of £48.9 million of which only £9.1 million came from broadcasting. The vast majority of our income came from ticket sales (12.6), hospitality & other commercial revenue (11.9), match day catering (5.8) and merchandise sales (9.4).

Fortunately we achieved promotion and hopefully have dodged what would have been a catastrophic loss of income from March 2020 onwards.

Have no idea how the clubs who remain in the championship clubs will get through this, it's just not possible to survive without match day income.

Tbf it would be almost as depressing as the takeover thread until the the last few weeks.

We actually have a separate thread for each transfer rumour anyway. They normally go something like this:

Post 1: Twitter linking us with Anee ****a
Post 2: Never heard of him - any good?
Post 3: Looks good on this You-tube video from when he played in Botswana
Post 4: Aston Villa have bid 20mill for him - there is no way Ashley will compete with that
    Post 5: He's ****e

All 5 posts by Captain Wrong apart from last one by ACS.

Well yeah as your club was a classic example of chasing the dream, as in Bielsa’s first season your wage bill was virtually equivalent to your entire turnover. You had an operating loss of £36m as a result which was partially offset by making a £15m profit on player trading.

Living within your means can just mean living hand to mouth though which i get the impression is close to what lots of EFL clubs do but without the likelihood of the being a queue of buyers if you get in trouble .
A lot of the clubs who have newish grounds also now get a reasonable percentage of the revenue through hospitality / events all of which will have stopped until recently .
Doesn't help that HMRC takes a much harder line with football clubs than in the past due to so many running up huge debts and then going into administration .

I must admit I’m enjoying the current Captain theory that the Saudis are funding player purchases of their choice via the back door.

    Pure quality <laugh>

It's the parachute payments that force clubs to overspend to try and be competitive.

We had the highest income excluding parachute payments but fall to 6th when they are taken into account. If you wish to achieve promotion there seems to be little choice but to overspend otherwise the relegated clubs from the PL would have too much of an advantage. You have to remember that the financial advantage lasts for 3 seasons and each season another 3 clubs (not always different ones) come down and so the list of clubs receiving the parachute payments can increase. Over the last 5 seasons we actually have a profit of £55 million on player trading, we've had to sell good players to keep within the FFP regulations whilst still trying to have a good enough squad to achieve promotion.

Incidentially, we wouldn't have failed the EFL Profit & Sustainability Rules last season either, as we sold Jansson (5m), Roofe (7m) and Clarke (10m) in the summer of 2019. That's in addition to the £55m player trading profits of the last 5 years (published accounts).

Not quite risking all or chasing the dream as you suggest but more trying to level a skew whiff playing field.

The salient difference being, that one of the duo actually bought the club first mate.......

I get that parachute payments skew the playing field to a degree, but to end up with a wage bill that’s virtually equivalent to your turnover was a matter of choice.

Wasn't there an article last season stating that the average wage/turnover ratio in the championship was 104%?

Completely bonkers and a ticking time bomb for sure.

Unfortunately the wage bills (apart from the odd exception) usually equate to finishing positions in the Championship just a they do in the PL. We funded ours by player sales and getting good loans in (Costa, Harrison & White). We brought Bamford in on big wages (for us) and then it sort of snowballed from there to keep everyone happy.

A massive juggling act is how I would describe it.

Football clubs being wound up for about 6 months wages of Southampton's third choice goalkeeper.

    Game's gone.

Nope. But as long as the lifelong fans in Malaysia get to watch Oleball then all is good in the world of football.
