Old enough to remember the size of my bills from 1977 onwards. They employed people who then spent that money in the local community and paid tax and national insurance. The industry wasn't a drain on the tax payer as both gas and electric paid money into the Treasury. It worked perfectly well from 1945 until the 1980s, discontinuing the few months when Ted Heath had to introduce the three day week.

Since then the industry employs less British workers and will shortly be paying the Chinese a fortune for our power. I'd rather have a nationalised energy industry every day over what we have now. Its so bad even the Tory are threatening to cap prices.

Privatisation meant that money previously invested in infra-structure, was instead given to share holders who contribute nothing. It's like having employees paid to do **** all. The infra-structure is now in a very poor state of repair as a cosnequence.

They're can't be many on social media backing May, it's all labour on my feeds. It's hard to put pro tory opinion on social media if you're under 30 as the backlash is mental. I presume it was the same if you wanted to keep scotland in the union.

Imagine my feed then! I actually closed my facebook, but had to come back on due to some work I'm doing in a couple of weeks. It's brutal, people don't even think about what they're saying, it's just a constant "**** the tories".

But the benefits of privatisation “manifestly outweighed its failings, which would have become far more intractable had public sector ownership endured”

The government benefited from one-off sale proceeds and increased corporation tax receipts, as well as a surge in investment. Shareholders, with some notable exceptions, have done very well with many privatisations heavily outperforming the FTSE 100, the paper said. A notable exception was the 2001 collapse of Railtrack.

“It is clear that while utility privatisation is not a perfect solution, it is infinitely better than stultifying public sector ownership. It is inconceivable that the massive level of utility investment over the last quarter century could have been undertaken if public ownership had continued.”

Adam Smith Institute are Neo Libs mate – obviously they’re pro privitisation.

Queen's worth every penny financially. She's our Brand and you couldn't buy the opportunities she provides the country. It's not even close the value for money she is.

However that's nothing to do with the democratic issue of having a royal family. Any arguments about how daft it is having an unelected head of state on democratic grounds can't be argued with. But we don't lose money from them.

Someone with some sense at last. She makes the UK more money than people imagine, directly or indirectly.

Compared to 90% of the world, YOU are in a priveliged position for pretty much the self and same reasons. Should you be abdicated too, in the name of a fairer global society?

No I'm not. My existence isn't entirely funded by the taxpayer.

But other than that, good point well made.

Amazing how you can get people to vote against their own self-interest and be happy to do so

Isn't that what we're supposed to do? Apparently. Vote in the best interests of others.

You beat me to it. Bums Chins is a privileged white British male. Who on earth is he to criticise somebody for being born privileged. And I bet a penny to a pound each of those princes would rather swap places with him and have the luxury to live a free life away from all the scrutiny and responsibility.

What makes you think I'm white?
