Interesting thread since my mother in law passed away last week and we've been trying to find something appropriate. we went for this in the end

It is very strange to reply to this thread on a Saturday morning. Obviously we are not playing today.

I have heard that people often play Wham"s "Wake me up before you go go" as a final parting song.

Bore us with the whole list, Strolls!

Could include a host of Smiths/Morrissey stuff, especially There is a Light that Never Goes Out (except I don't believe that); I Have Forgiven You Jesus (too much irony?) or Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want.

Classical look no further than Mahler 5th Symphony 4th movement, Adagietto.

Led Zeps In My Time of Dying is probably the song I'd keep on the desert island, but somehow not right for my funeral.......so today's choice is:

"We're sick and tired of all this self serving greiving"

Well, as you asked..........

It wouldn't be in a church, but I would have a hymn - Abide With Me.

My was always going to be the stone roses. But now that i am a bit older I want something a bit more cheerful

I have been to two funerals in the last month...yup I know how to have a good time.

The first ...was a member of an opposition quiz team.
His sister told a story how he always loved information and trivia and when he was 18, he decided to buy every no1 single for the rest of his life (I do not know how far this went)...and so she said....this song aleways reminds me of him, because it was the first record in that sequence

And this is what they played

Mine....I have been thinking about this for a few years..honestly really have
First up...... of course...The Levellers...Carry Me

When you're standing by the roadside, and it's a long way to go I'll carry you...if you'll carry me, friend..... I'll carry you.
A definite life motto for me.

I will also enjoy the shocked look of the assembled company (shame I won't be there) when it gets to the middle 8..which goes

But Jane is takin' heroin ,And Paul is getting pissed
Steve is getting stoned, and too ****ed to fight
Sara's on the acid, And Sean has blown his mind
Someone's busy hiding ,too ****ed to fight
Yeah some have found religion,And some have run away
And some they form a party to find a way
But there is a way...

Next song...Hi Ho Silver Lining...our victory song, and great memories from my youth

And if any of you lot are there ...I would love you to shout out "Super Rangers" at the appropriate time.

And finally something completely inappropriately appropriate .......... Gogol Bordellos Indestructible

King hell Sku, that's a great song but do you really want it played at your funeral? People will be jumping into the furnace after your casket.

It seems a few people really have thought seriously about their funeral music. It had never crossed my mind (an admittedly short journey) until Strolls put this thread up. I think my most fitting memorial will be continue as now, make no plans whatsoever for my own demise and let someone else deal with it for a change. They can play Itsy Bitsy Polka Dot Bikini for all I care.

Hmmm. Perhaps I'm too pragmatic. But it's perfectly apt.

There's no deep hidden symbolism in this choice......just love this track, always have, and find it uplifting.....

OK, can't go wrong with Rob Gordon's quote from the great "High Fidelity"...

Songs at my funeral: "Many Rivers to Cross" by Jimmy Cliff, "Angel" by Aretha Franklin, and I've always had this fantasy that some beautiful, tearful woman would insist on "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" by Gladys Knight. But who would that woman be?

I saw Billy Bragg perform this song last Sept and it brought back memories of my own Dad.

(I tried to create a link there, but it doesn't seem to want to work).
