There's two Patty. The trachea is the wind pipe for breathing. The esophagus is the food pipe which is the start of the alimentary canal which leads to your stomach through your pyloric sphincter. The epiglottis is the flap which prevents food going "the wrongway" down your windpipe. Peristalsis is the rhythmic constriction of the esophagus muscles forcing food down to you stomach.
