Don't know if its been brought 2 your attention...

Nigel Worthington has hit out after Newcastle's Shane Ferguson failed to answer a call-up to join the Northern Ireland squad for Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Estonia.

Worthington attempted to contact the defender and also notified his club but as of Thursday afternoon he had been unable to reach Ferguson.

"It beggars belief that there's no willingness or manners," said the Northern Ireland manager.

We can't literally drag people in."

The issue is complicated somewhat by suggestions earlier this year that Ferguson was considering switching his allegiance to the Republic of Ireland.

However, he returned to play for the Northern Ireland Under-21s last month, seemingly putting any question marks over his allegiance to bed.

Worthington added: "I've been trying for the last 36-48 hours to get in contact with the boy to let him know I'd like to draft him into the squad.

"The club has been notified and we've had the medical records sent back to us, as we always do with players to see if there are any problems, but we've had no contact."

Ferguson has a Northern Ireland senior cap after playing against Tuesday night's opponents Italy in a friendly two years ago.

As that was not a competitive fixture he is not yet tied to Northern Ireland but would be if he played any part in the Group C double-header over the next few days.

The lad's got to make a decision soon, think he's hoping the problem will go away by ignoring it but he's got to step up and pin his colours to the mast.

Personally I think he should stick with Northern Ireland (as much as I'd love him in the Republic squad) since they are the ones who have helped develop him but ultimately the decision is his.

I don't agree with this kind of thing generally, manners cost nothing. But I thought Ferguson had said pubically that he was yet to make a decision about his future and didn't wish to be considered by either until he had? If so then Worthington should just have left him to his own devices until he made a decision.

I think he doesnt know what to do. ROI are the better side so perhaps he's holding out for them to pick him, and maybe he doesnt feel ready to make the decision now.

I think its a crazy ruling anyway, you're either Northern Irish or your not for me, until they become a united country. But I suppose that is pretty darn complicated too!

It is quite strange, leads to the age old problem though, Northern Ireland is his country of birth and can give him games now, but ROI are more likely to win things (still highly unlikely). Abeid is facing a similar situation with France-Algeria.

I think he should pick Northern Ireland, personally.

I do but like I say I'm old fashioned about most things. That's his country of birth so he should play for them. I don't mind if you move to a country at a young age and qualify for them, afterall the world is a lot smaller than it used to be and there can be any number of circumstances that leave you feeling more akin to your adopted country. I just can't see how they can choose between the two Irelands given they are seperate states. Politics getting involved in football I suppose. I assume all Fergusons family are northern irish of course?

With Catholic lads its not so much a case of who is better, its who would you rather play for...He'll have grown up wearing ROI shirts and supporting lads like Given!

Thing is, if a few more players picked NI over the Republic, the balance might shift. Northern Ireland are still pretty decent, better than Wales in my opinion and not too far behind Scotland. With a couple more talented youngsters siding with them they could have a realistic go at qualifying for a major tourney.

He's a young lad must be completly stuck between a rock and a hard place he wants international football but dosnt want to end up at a team which cant compete for anything but equally he probably wants to play for his home nation...as a newcastle fan ide want him playing for the republic so he can get some better football although i dont know where he's originally from if i was him ide pick my home country
