I totally agree and I've heard many of the top coaches say likewise. For me the only key element of a formation that makes a significant difference is the number of centre backs used.

That's an interesting point. You're right, and there's a few other things that managers (away with you and your continental 'coaches') always say, yet fans don't seem to take any notice. Hodgson when England manager was forever being asked patronising questions about formations. It clearly irritated him and he'd always play it down and try to explain why they aren't the be all and end all.
 
I would say how wide you set up your wider players is another formation issue - but yes, generally it's ability and organisation that gets you through. City are presently short on both, as a result of past transfer policy and past coaching staff policy.

I can be watching it and trying to spot the formations and still fail
I do like a decent game though!

I also can't remember details of games for anymore than a few hours (although great atmospheres at games I can remember forever)

Each to his own. Some fans like the tactical side of the game and others don't.

As long as we all enjoy watching then it doesn't really matter.
