Inspired by a post from Top Class https://not606.com/threads/individual-team-threads.398011/ And a reply by DH Canary https://not606.com/threads/individual-team-threads.398011/#post-15478381 I thought I'd see how this one goes - a thread to discuss F1 circuits and track design. what makes a good track for F1? any design features that work well? what circuits would we like to see in F1 (or removed from F1)? Just any discussion about circuits in F1.
Bin any circuit that only favours RedBull Keep all those that are good for Mercedes, McClaren, Ferrari and Williams etc
Bring back gravel traps . If you spin off and can’t get back on with throttle control , then tough **** . won’t happen though ,will pixs off the sponsors .
With the way Max is driving and being allowed to drive it would just help him!!! A strip of gravel might be good for track limits though?
Any thing to prove the importance of keeping the bloody thing on the road / not taking the piss . Yes I agree , strip of gravel at the inner edge of the white line might help . I am old school and want real traps though .
Yep, I've wanted the return of gravel traps for ages, but I'm not sure any more. Overtaking is hard enough already, and gravel traps might discourage ultra-late braking. (I guess that's partly their objective after all.) In this age where dirty air is such a problem for cars trying to overtake, perhaps a spectacular dive (up the inside or round the outside) is one of the few remaining opportunities for on-track overtakes outside of DRS zones. I honestly don't know. I'd like to see them back but I wonder whether gravel traps are suited to current-era cars.
A couple of other things... Any thoughts on street circuits? Any thoughts on Monaco in particular? I can see why F1 wants to keep it in the calendar, but it can't be for racing reasons. Any circuits that F1 should remove from its calendar?
I don't think there is much in the way of racing at Monaco but I do like quali plus it's one circuit I have actually walked round so it's quite nice seeing the cars race and knowing I have walked round there - silly reason really
Monoco only works if the cars are smaller. The new cars should be better. Probably some track redesigns. I've seen some good ideas argued with a longer straight before the tunnel which is the best place to overtake anyway
I also thought maybe it should be made more excessive for drivers who are not in F1 to compete in like le mans and indy. Make the triple crown official!
Thinking about it I do like Spa. I wonder how it will be with the mods they are doing. It's not that I like the drivers risking their lives, it's the high speed twists, the weight of the cars changing over the crest, it's just amazing watching the drivers threading the needle and having ultimate confidence the car will do what they want and hold together. I hope they don't destroy Eau Rouge and Raidillon, just make it safer - OK maybe difficult ask.
Regardless of what they do to improve overtaking, Monaco is always going to be an absolute dull fest as the cars get bigger and bigger. Great watching the cars blast around such tight streets, but it's hardly a race at all.
I was But the reason for the helmet winning the title will be an issue for ANYONE who was not an out and out helmet fan
Must admit I love the Monaco race , but I will also admit I look at modern races and think of years gone by . 1982 anyone ?
the issue with all modern tracks is in general very similar. soulless. i think personally camber is something that should be played with more and blind corners and such. natural tracks had these aspects to them. The Saudi track was absolutely stupid for example. it is the other side of monaco. a track where following is difficult but they created a situation where it is inevitable, be it 1 or 2 or 3 years where a car will crash and another car at high speed will plough through it and kill. it is inevitable.
