I believe it's the Americanism where they try to be ironic. It doesn't work. However, Americanisms in the mouths, or under the fingers, of Americans is fine by me. It's when it creeps into British conversation that it becomes a step too far. And no, it's not language enrichment or evolution, so take that argument away where it belongs.
