Yeah, it feels like the right time but fair play to the guy. He's had a bit of luck with the way draws have fallen but you can only beat what's in front of you and his record is the best of any England manager for a very long time. Oddly, what happens next may define his time in charge. Part of me thinks he's taken the team as far as he can, some of what he brought to the role isn't quite so important any more and hopefully someone else can come in and make that next step and win a tournament or two. I'm not convinced that's what will happen though. In a few years we may be looking back very fondly on his time in charge.
For all the stick everyone’s given him I’m genuinely sad about this. Top bloke. The best England manager ever based on his record. But just couldn’t get us over the line… I’m not sure anyone can to be honest. There is a good chance that whoever comes in will be much worse. Thanks Gareth.
It will be interesting to see what the next manager achieves. It is very obvious that European football as a whole has declined but that Spain and France are still pushing ahead. We also have incredible coaching and have won things at juniour levels. My only hope is we play to our strengths and choose a manager who presses and attacks no matter who the opposition are.
Fair play, I have been a critic of him at times but he still has a pretty mighty record. Yes the draw has been kind, but old England don’t beat Germany in Euro 2020 and Netherlands this year. It’s definitely the right time to go, he has built a great platform but just can’t get over the line, now hopefully we can get someone who will punch through (whilst hopefully playing a slightly more entertaining style).
Someone that's out of a job and gets the most out of talented youngsters? Pochettino. Unfortunately I think he would turn it down being Argentinian.
Pochettino would be great. If we want to stick with English I’d go Eddie Howe. Think he’d be a cracking appointment.
Ange an interesting one. Howe over Potter for me. I think Potter is basically Southgate with one more sugar in his tea.
Apparently he’s said he’d be up for it. He’d be fantastic, and my first choice. Being the FA they’ll go for Howe or Potter though.
Howe for me. Think he's the most flexible and best at in-game management. Most of the others have their specific style and will require the players getting familiar with it etc. Howe would hit the ground running, and I really think he'd get the better of most other top international teams.
Also he genuinely speaks really well and seems like a top chap which is what the FA are more interested in than winning football tournaments
I have no issue with it being Howe. The romantic football lover in me would prefer Poch (I’m thinking Klopp and Pep aren’t actually realistic).
As a Saints fan, Poch's brief tenure was the most exciting moment I can remember supporting Saints. I would love to see that story end with him as England manager. We all remember when he couldn't even speak English! And what a turnaround from Owen's dive at his expense, to then managing the team!
