I’m out with the wife and have more chance of scoring. I think Southgate is planning to not win - if they win they will play zee Germans next.

Hopefully First Minister Sturgeon is taking Scotland’s exit stoically. I believe she is one of Sir Barney’s regular readers so should be well practiced in hiding her disappointment stoically.

Stiff upper lip etc <ok>

Not necessarily, could be Portugal or France. Doesn't matter, anyway, England would face a top team sooner or later, might as well be the first game in the last 16?

(Erm, can't any of your German friends up there pronounce the 'th' sound' properly? They don't say 'zee' down here, honest they don't!. <laugh>)

(You know, Oddy, I can shout, I have always had a hell of a job with the 'ü' umlaut, inasmuch as, although I guess I get it right, my lips and mouth crease-up so much my friends used to be in stitches watching me. Like I was trying to give a halfhearted 'Bussi' to some poor unsuspecting woman! Oh well, had to learn German late in life (in retirement) as I was too busy in my job to really concentrate on studying. Regardless, it's been a good life down here, really has.)

“Zee” Germans is a nod to the film “Snatch” Swanny - well worth a watch <ok>

Regarding the umlaut, here is a trick I learnt a few years ago. Shape your mouth as if you were going to say the letter without the Umlaut (so in your case “u”) but then say the letter “e”. Works fine (also for ä and ö).

We're through, that's about the top and bottom of it, from a group that we should have taken 1st place anyway. At least we saw a team with a bit of pace in it, and a bit more energy in the passing. Helped massively that we scored early as that could have turned out to be a right ole bore of a game to watch. Can't say the 2nd half was as enjoyable a watch and I'm still uncertain that we can come back from conceding the first goal in future matches.

The one thing I do agree with is what Gary Neville said about the team under Southgate, he knows what we are, and has set us up to be hard to score against as we are not a team with loads of goals in us. Which I thought was fair comment...

Onwards and upwards as they say...!!

I don't think England against the better teams are able to score one and then lock the door-Italian style.

Yep, practised, and it works, many thanks!

Guy Ritchie's film, "Snatch", was great. Fine performances by Brad Pitt as Irish Traveller "One Punch" Mickey O'Neil ("Pikey"), and Vinnie Jones as Bullet-Proof Tony. Must watch it again sometime, have it somewhere, but am sure it's a cassette recording. Don't know if I can work that any more. :emoticon-0100-smile
