He would be a British citizen i think, so he could play for England but not be English Crazy i know but who'd of thought that we would have a swede or an Italian at the helm, Its all wrong.....Wrong i tell you.

I was under this impression about Giggs, but I’ve heard it argued that because the various “home” FAs have this agreement about this grandparent bollocks he couldn’t have played for us. Despite Giggs living in England in his youth and from whenever it was Man Utd signed him, because his parents and his grandparents were all Welsh he only ever qualified for Wales.

This grandparent business is dodgy anyway. It’s hard enough in many cases to establish someone’s nationality in the first place, never mind your grandparents. Jon Walters’ apparently qualifies for Ireland because one of his grandparents “has Irish connections”. What the hell does that mean?? Reminds me of the opportunistic pratt Obama claiming “Irishness” because he thinks one his great-great-great grandparents (of which we all have 32) came from there. The grandparent rule just means that half of us could play for umpteen countries, so where’s the drastic leap from the five year rule. At least people who’ve been here for five years may have some affinity for the place. Has Jordan Rhodes ever lived in Scotland? I don’t know – I merely ask.

As for the England captain I cannot fathom why we make such a fuss about it here: just pick them match by match, tournament by tournament if necessary. Like those shocking underachievers the Italians and the Germans do. If we must have one, it’ll be Gerrard in the short term and in the longer term probably Willshire as long as Arsenal haven’t knackered his ankle forever.

Some good points, and I totally agree.
But I think the national side is in danger of becoming pretty much meaningless nowadays anyway - it started with getting a foreign manager which is sacrilege in my book (where's the patriotism gone?); we only invented the game and here we are turning to foreigners to manage us. The way things are going, (foreign) players will be eligible to play for England provided they have a distant relative whose next door neighbour once waved to an English milkman....it's an absolute joke, no wonder there seems to be less interest in the national side nowadays. I can't see other major European football nations opting for foreign managers, they seem too fiercely patriotic to allow that to happen.

I would have nominated Jim Bowen as England manager!

Look at what I could have won...Super, Smashing, Great and you cant beat a bit of bully!
 
phil jones is the type of player that should be captain. He's very young and I can see him in the England squad for some time so I think his time will come

Gerrards good but his inconsistancy due to injury in recent times has been a concern for me. No doubting his class though.
 
Got to say I don't like 'keepers as captains, but Joe Hart seems the natural choice for me. We know he'll start every game, and he's a reliable character. Not afraid to let his team mates know what he thinks either.

Great shout with Phil Jones being the future captain. Gerrard will try to spur on players when the pressures on but I don't think he is the type of character that motivates players, he can sometimes seem a bit in background at times, good player and one of senior players I would include in the team though.
