I think Gus is treading a fine line by trying to keep the supporters interested up to the end of the season, I would much rather he just instructed them to play as they did against Newcastle

Where are the mackems? This thread is depressingly black and white!

I lived in Newcastle for about 3-4 years and loved the Newcastle-Sunderland 'banter', as it bordered on war! I had a (Newcastle supporting) mate who said he hated his blood because it was red! Similarly, I had a Sunderland mate who always insisted that the only good Mag was a dead Mag (because then they had some red on them!) The 'banter' between them both was superb. They'd get drunk and try to put each other in hospital, and I always stopped them -- except once when I was too drunk! Some people are shocked when they see this, but I loved it. I've seen good rivalries (Liverpool [my team] and Everton when they were the friendly rivalry) and bad (I come from Northern Irish background and those rivalries make Celtic-Rangers look pleasant!) In short, I think everyone would prosper from Sunderland staying in the Premiership. Even Newcastle fans. In the short term you'd love them getting relegated and being a whole division away but the rivalry defines you and is part of who you are as fans. Long live the black-white/red-white divide!

From an outsider in peace <peacedove>(sort of!) <cheers>

There should be an option for Yes and No

I love the derbies, I would love to see North-East football prospering like it used to, and to see all the local teams doing better. It's also good for the area economically, as being in the Prem does bring a financial boost to the area to the tune of millions.

that said, if it happens.....
