Well if I'm sitting on a desert island I think it'll be more relaxed and not so rocky. ?

Best shot as it's difficult making a list in a short space of time.

No order just a list.

What an amazing topic this is NSF.....And thank you for it.

In the late 70' I was a DJ. I had to buy a lot of stuff to accomodate birthdays,weddings and whatever. And I have a decnt collection of vinyl.

Over, 3,000 45's.....from the 60's onwards.

But that does not give me any advantage against anyone to recall everything from my past in order to complile the same kind of list.

Let's all be honest here, reading all your lists, and your comments as to why you chose your lists....you correctly added that your chioces could change next week etc...Yes yes yes. And why? - Well it's because we are all selecting our choices based on emotions from the past, and from the present, which may change depending on your own emotions....

Music is so powerful !!!

I posted the exact question in the Local Evening Gazette in the early 80's...and the reactions are exactly the same as the responses on here.

It took over 4 months of entries to attempt a final list.....however, the songs chosen were placed into so many cateories, that it was so difficult to arrive at a final list.

However, it was decided that - On countback - Ballads outnumbered uptempo music by a long long way.

Why?............we cry more sad tears with ballads than we do with heavy rock songs - AND we cry more happy tears with Ballads than we do with other sons too....Fact !

My selections (in no particular order)

The songs that make me cry -

- Yesterday
- Hey Jude
- Let It Be
- The Long And Winding Road

- Over The Rainbow - Eva Cassidy
- What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong (my late mam's and my late grandad's favourite song)

Bohemian Rhapsody is the best song of all time....however, It doesn't not make my list....I'm placing the sad tears above this....just for today..

So instead of BO RAP...is my last choice is this -

Please play my final choice guys....he wrote this when he knew he was was dying. He met Montserrat Cabelle....she also duted with Barcelona.

He wanted acceptance of being gay, even though we all know that we all accept gender acceptance...we know he IS the best showman of all time.

These lyrics are heartbreakin man.

She Loves You -The Beatles ( my first single)

Train in G Major- Lindisfarne (from my first LP)

A Little Night Music- Mozart (A level revision music)

Perfect - Fairground Attraction (came out the year we were married)

Fascinating Rhythm- Stephane Gappelli and Yehudi Menuhin (Just loved the stuff from Parkinson)

Roll on the Day -Allan Taylor ( last song played at the Davy Lamp Folk Club the night before I left for Leeds Uni)

This England- The Younguns (Possibly the best song about being English by not nationalist)

The Auld Town Shuffle-The Easy Club. (It reminds me of Edinburgh a city I love)

I think that's such an important point. I put Duel by Propaganda on my list, and while it's a decent tune it would get nowhere near my final list unless a lass I was completely besotted with got me to put it on the juke box a million times when it was in the charts. Happy times.

... and music that would help you through being alone on a desert island.

My list of favourites, in the real world, would be quite different.

This thread is really interesting because music, for people who really love music, is deeply personal and we can become ridiculously defensive of artists we love or derisory of those we just don't get.

The one thing that always puzzles me, on similar threads, is how many people say Bohemian Rhapsody is the greatest song ever written ... I think it's absolutely shyte and the most pompous sack of drivel I've ever heard. It's just a series of random meaningless phrases in a meaningless song that sounds profound but is anything but. It's become an urban truth that it's a masterpiece because it's been said so many times.

Queen, to me, are just the group equivalent on Elton John, a bunch of art students dressing up and showing off

Strange how people are sometimes blind to things.

I was on the door of Rock City, for a U2 gig, and a big 'rocker' came in with 'Queen' embroidered into the back of his denim jacket. In a very friendly way I asked if the homosexual aspect bothered him. He was incredulous and didn't know what I meant ... he was totally unaware.

I asked him why he thought they'd chosen the name 'Queen', dressed up as housewives in videos and came on stage like drag acts. He still wouldn't have it and became quite aggressive

I didn't dare ask if he thought Brian May married someone who looked like him so he could actually shag himself ...

As others have said - it`s an almost impossible choice so I have ducked it - instead I have identified that there are some of you that I think I could quite happily share a desert island with (musically!) and others that I reckon would force me to take my chances with the local sharks...
