Never has a nil-nil result in the Premier League met with a heartier roar. Good riddance to the record and tell that twat of a Man city player that avoiding ignominy and shame means a damn sight more to most fans (even non-saints fans) than Man City's glory.

Both are ****ers…..

And speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's 606 phone-in after the game, Premier League winner Chris Sutton was not impressed with the Saints' celebrations.

He said: "I don't mind the fans celebrating because they haven't had much to celebrate, but the players on the full-time whistle? That is embarrassing, celebrating being the second-worst Premier League team of all time with 12 measly points. How low is your bar?

"Is it something to celebrate being the second-worst team? Watching players punch the air and celebrate, that is embarrassing. It is absolute amateur hour.

"It has been a disastrous season. If I am a Southampton fan I am excited, but if I am seeing my players celebrating I would be thinking 'heaven help us for next season'. What a bunch of losers."

Co-presenter on the 606 show, Robbie Savage, who captained Derby in that record low 2007-08 season, also called the players' reactions "pathetic".

Thick as sh*t. I'd expect this sort of ignorance from fans, but not from ex-professionals.

Obviously the players are relieved as well but I do get their point about any excessive celebrating by the players. I didn’t see it so no idea what their celebrations were like.

Sutton clearly been reading Not606 then.

Is this a phone in show? Always take the pundits takes on shows like that with a pinch of salt. Completely designed to annoy people and get them to phone in and have an argument to go viral

I didn’t watch it either, but Sutton has always had a hate for saints, and will stick the knife in whenever he can …..Robbie is just thick.

Sutton is the epitome of saying stuff trying to get a reaction. I refuse to believe anyone is that stupid/contradictory without doing it on purpose. He always has a different take to everyone else and usually one that very few people agree with, he’s made his career on it

TBH I think they've got a point. Players don't have anything to celebrate.

As I said it depends on the extent of the celebrations. Even if we were 10th and on 50 points or whatever I’d expect the players to celebrate a draw with City at home straight after the final whistle. Given the season we’ve had I think it’s understandable that the players would have a minute or so of celebration after yesterday’s game. Hassenhuttl cried his eyes out when we beat Liverpool ffs completely destroying any chance I had of gloating over the Liverpool fans I know

If they went round doing that cringey arm flailing thing with the crowd that everyone seems to do now or were on the pitch for 15 mins after full time milking it then I can see Suttons point

We are not very good and managed to keep a clean sheet against Man City. I would celebrate that as a player. I remember playing a cup game against much higher opposition when I was young and we were absolutely battered the whole game but drew 0-0. We felt like we won the cup! Lost on pens anyway!

Exactly. Considering we recently conceded injury time goals against Fulham and Palace, I fully understand the relief at getting this one over the line, especially against a team like City.

Obviously they are not pleased about the sh*tty points total, as Sutton is suggesting.

It has been such a **** season that you have to take small pleasures where you can.

Maybe it is also the fact that we didn't lose to the current champions. Sutton and Co didn't think of that. Savage is still sore that Derby keep the unwanted record. I really don't care what the pundits think anyway. They are so far up the backsides of the top clubs that I can never take them seriously.

I was pretty ****ing ecstatic, but it's in a relieved, thank **** for that way rather than celebrating any real achievement. It's not the same kind of celebrating as we were doing at full time at Wembley 12 months ago. Not even close.

I also don't get the comments about the players, because from where I was sat they didn't do any over the top celebrations at all? In fact to me, they mainly looked relieved to have finally managed to get over the line in a game where they worked bloody hard and spent large parts of the game throwing their bodies on the line. Yes they've been ****ing **** all season, and 12 points is nothing to be celebrated and it would have been a joke if they had been punching the air and standing in a line to bow. But it really wasn't like that. I saw it as thank **** for that, and a sheepish thank you to us fans for helping them over the line with the atmosphere and for following them in numbers all season despite the absolute embarrassment.

However. As they said on TSP. The likes of Sutton, Savage etc. entire MO is to say controversial things to get clicks, to get people interacting and phoning in etc.
So we really shouldn't waste our breathes responding to it (he says after typing a paragraph).

Totally agree with this and was exactly how I saw it in the ground.
