That's a piss poor record in all honesty. Spurs play attacking football and get a fair few goals so no excuse there. He's a good footballer but if the end product isn't there then what's the point, bring on the Turkish lad.
I already know that LOL I said that on page 2 but let people cream in there socks about him LOL the lad isn't attacking midfield at all.
I think he's the sort of player that we need, big, strong, pacey and he's probably just within the realms of possibility with him seemingly out of favour at spurs. He knows the league and should be able to slot straight in I think that this is about as good a signing as we could hope for, as much as I'd like to think that we'll sign this Turkish wonderkid from the German league I just can't see it to be honest. Having said all of that I've not seen it being reported particularly widely or with any real enthusiasm so it may well be just total nonsense.
Gomez takes penalty's which massively skews the statistics to compare him to Dembele, the problem with Gomez is that he constantly slows our play down and a more direct player like Dembele would be a step in the right direction imo. He hasn't been a massive success at Spurs but while at Fulham he looked the part as an attacking midfielder, he's not the most creative midfielder around but unfortunately most decent creative midfielders are just out of our reach.
I'm not saying that Gomez is a better footballer but if we're looking for an attacking midfielder to score some goals then Dembele's record is bad in that respect. Yes Gomez has scored a few penalties but that's a positive not a negative, if he's not taking them who will? I doubt Dembele would be much cop.
It just strikes me as a case of a 'big' name seeming like a step forward but is it really? What's he going to offer us in an attacking position if not goals or assists?
Just making the point that Gomez taking penalties makes a comparison of goals scored with Dembele an unfair one that's all mate, Gomez is good at penalties but I seem to remember Defoe scoring a few in the past.
I just think Dembele's the sort who would get the ball and drives us 10, 20 yards up the pitch which would help to close the gap between midfield and our forwards, but granted he's not the most creative player around but that's not too big a deal if we have the likes of Johnson and Lens up there to help out in that respect. I just see him as poor man's Yaya Toure sort of player, has the physicality but not quite the class.
I think you're right about Defoe and penalties, there's not many from the front line I'd trust with a penno but yeah I'm pretty sure Defoe is good at them.
I was a lot happier about the prospect of Dembele signing before Indiana referenced his stats, he's a step up in quality but we really need players with goals and assists in them and if we're getting him for an attacking role then it doesn't seem like we'll get many from him.
To be honest I find his lack of goals more worrying than assists, I don't think assists statistics hold a lot of weight to be honest, the assisting player isn't always the player that has made the goal or played the key pass in the build up to a goal, I just think as a statistic it can be a bit deceiving. For example if we do sign him it could benefit our wide players in getting more assists by quickly pushing the team into a more attacking position but that won't be reflected in any of Dembeles statistics, I just think as a statistic it's pretty pants really.
Sadly this link has thus far only grown from a pretty scant Twitter rumour which the author has back peddled a little on. He was superb against us last season. He is most definitely better than what we have but it's merely gossip.
Dembele had a dreadful season but apart from shots and a single assist his stats still completely trounce Gomez's. It's alright saying not many goals here, and not many assists that. There's more to the team game that is football other then individual easy to go to stats. Take a look at full picture and you'll see the gulf in class is huge.

More shots doesn't mean more goals, but Demble as an all round player will do so much towards playing as a better unit, he'd help install much needed balance and get the best out of team mates. Comparing Gomez to Dembele is offensive. Gomez is a squad player for bottom of the table struggling side (i.e. us last season - but hopefully not any more!). Dembele is a quality starting CM for a top 6-8 side who is still in his prime. His goals are not relevant, it's what he could bring to our team that is. And my word would he be fantastic. Between him and Catts, we would never get bullied in the same fashion as we have for the last 3-4 seasons. I'm sure there'd be plenty enough midfield goals on offer from Lens, AJ, Giacc (maybe even Rodwell) if they had this kind of bedrock behind them.
