It’s fascinating reading this thread back a year or so down the line.

General sentiments were that Mepham was a much better player than Ballard and we’d have been happy to let DB go for £10-15m.

12 months later and Ballard is one of the top performing defenders in the PL and probably now worth about £50m. Mepham looks quite likely to be getting relegated to L1 in a rotten WBA. Funny old game.
I’ve said it many times before. It’s a good job none of us are in charge of player recruitment and retention and it’s left to those who know what they’re doing :emoticon-0102-bigsm

@SunderlandAFC
We were going to ask what your favourite Dan Ballard moment is, but that's too easy.

Instead, where does he rank among your favourite-ever Sunderland players?

That's a hard one for me. I've had a few. The first player that I was absolutely gutted that left was Marco and I've had a few favourite players since then and I would suppose Ballard is up there amongst my favourite centre halves

Brilliant news and shows all the players that if they prove themselves they will be rewarded.

Also shows younger players that we will support them with new contracts as they improve.

Fantastic news and richly deserved for the lad himself. Pretty telling that FG is unequivocal in that he couldn’t go out and sign us a Ballard.
Well done Dan, keep it going lad.

Written off, by some, as not capable of stepping up to the PL ...

... just as well the club are making these calls.

I know this wasn't a dig at me but just sharing what my thoughts were. I wasn't too sure if he could step up or not (wasn'tsure in any if the lads but hoped for the best), he was one of the ones most likely to step up but still was a maybe! I deffo at times last season thought Mepham was the more reliable even better of the two <doh><laugh> not only has he stepped up he has looked excellent and must be easily up there with some of best cb's in the league!

One I didn't think could step up and would struggle everywhere was Trai! And he has struggled sometimes but just the normal rate of a decent prem player!

The one player I would have said 3 season ago was most destined for premier league out of our squad didn't get a sniff and has been moved on to the championship!

Don't ask me for any advice next time ya putting a bet on lads! <laugh>

I'm so glad he's staying. It's the best news I've read in ages!

We all have opinions about players and it's very difficult to gauge whether a player can 'step up' or not.

That's why I don't judge players too quickly.

I'm still a long way from judging Mundle, Talbi, Mayenda, Isidor and a few others.

Then there's players Reggie clearly rates but aren't much talked about, Cirkin, Rigg, Aleksic, the Jones boys, etc.

I have high hopes for Aleksic, there's just something about the lad that makes me think he has something.

Great news. It's great for Dan, and great for the club. Shows all players that performances, improvement and commitment are not taken for granted.

Really, this lad is the full package IMO. He's quick enough, a very good last man defender, reads the game well, can handle the ball, pass it and is outstanding in the air.

He can also score gravity defying, impossible to do, last minute winners in humungously big games!

Whoever told him he should play for NI, instead of England, may be having second thoughts.
