Root is head and shoulders above the rest of them. Must be best in the world on current form.

Malan is looking good too, though. He's a good bet for Australia if the series goes ahead.

I can't remember the last time England's top four batsmen all get to 50.

Shame for Malan, but a good innings.

Now with Root well settled, and the nutters - Bairstow, Buttler and Ali - to come, let’s go for 450 by close of play. Or more.

Well played Malan. A proper batsman.

England heading for a huge first innings lead.

    Nice one Joe.

Shame that the nutters all just about failed when under very little pressure, the top four had given them the ideal platform.

Just when it looked like India would get to lunch safely, Bairstow comes up with a stunning catch to get rid of Rahul.

    Overton bowling superbly.

Torn between the cricket and watching the massive column of black smoke billowing up from a factory fire about a mile from my house, with the odd huge explosion thrown in.

Unclear, there are a few around there on the industrial estate, could be automotive or plastics. But surrounded by residential. It’s been burning since about 10:30 this morning. Was momentarily worried, my son works in that direction, but he is fine, sending us updates and saying no work getting done where he is. No reports of injuries so far, but with something that big I’m assuming there must be some.

It’s made the front page of BBC national news app…..

It's a plastics factory. It looks like a good working job. The lads and lasses will enjoy tackling that one.

How costly will the delay in asking for review be?
Looked out live, although I wasn't sure if there had been an inside edge ro be fair.

England bowling well in helpful conditions, but India making a good fist of it.

Come on, let's get gobshite in!!

I thought of you, of course. Just taken the dog for a walk, the column of black smoke is still going, but a little less angry looking than earlier. It’s like living on the slopes of Mt Etna. Do the firefighters really enjoy these ones? I suppose by this stage the threat to life (except to those dealing with the fire) is over.

Tense stuff at Headingly, proper Test cricket. Stainsey will be bored. We could do with a wicket, we deserve one.
