50 to Hameed. Really pleased for him. I remember him being the next big thing a few years back, but then disappeared. Still not convinced he looks good enough to open in test cricket, but very pleased for him nonetheless.
Even my super optimism couldn't have reckoned on this. Fifty for Hameed, who looks a proper opener with a proper technique.
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Three tests then judge. If good, plane ticket to Australia. I read that Malan said that he was playing for a spot in the Ashes squad, which might be true but I don’t think I would have said that to journalists. Playing this India team might not have the same kudos as the Ashes, but it’s about second best at the moment, should be happy just the have this opportunity, regardless of what it might bring.
It's his third fifty in five Tests - he had a really good start in 2016 before breaking his hand. I think he has the technique to be a long term opener.for England - the only question-mark might be his temperament.
51 innings (including this one) 3 tons, 10 fifties, average about 32. Probably as good as we have at the moment. Don’t need these guys to score hugely every game (though it would be nice) just hang around like they are today.
If Carlsberg did test cricket opening days....... Kholi shouts his mouth off pre-game and India get bowled out for 78 by a rampant England with Kholi out early to a manically celebrating Anderson. England openers put on 120 without loss with both openers getting not out 50s. Plus, a fantastic, boisterous atmosphere at Headingley. Perfect day for England.
Didn't say he was a world beater, but I like him a lot. Really hope Hameed continues to prove me wrong, as we could have a half decent opening partnership if he does.
Blimey! Really … blimey! Just caught the end of day scorecards … well well well. And we lost the toss . Two openers STILL at the wicket for us and over 100 on the board. Brilliant (and unbelievable).
All in all that was a perfect day's cricket for England. It was pleasing for our openers to show India how to play the Headingly pitch.
Very good performance from England with both bat and ball. This might become one of those test matches that Kohli & co would not want on their CV.
Root motoring, twice the strike rate of the other batsmen, but nothing silly. Could be another good day. Apparently this is only the second time all four of the top order batsmen have passed 30 for England since March 2013, 108 tests ago.
