I'm not treating it as an attack but I think a conversation of who starts them off younger is pointless. You get a proper evangelical teacher they gonna teach them in P1 just like a catholic teacher. If you are talking about education as a whole, the Catholic church has a stronger hold over it than most other religions in the UK. In saying that they are losing control, my Christian Brothers Primary education was nothing like what my father tells me his was 25 years earlier - and the Catholic Grammar school education had half the teachers teaching me the bible was full of ****, as any good school would.
 
Me ma was raised a catholic, she calls herself agnostic and never pushed any belief on to me.
At quite a young age I came to the conclusion that "god" was an answer to the question "who created us?" yet just led to the question "who created god?" i.e. replaced one question with another. Can't see how anyone sane could look any deeper than that down that particular cul-de-sac.

Fair enough. Thanks for being open and at a bit more civil. Basically there is a belief that if you can keep a child going to chapel for the first 7 years of their life that they will enivitablly be a catholic for the rest of their life. Various arguments about the rationale but please lets not dig that up here...

The teachers obligation was only to uphold the school ethos. The national curriculum dealt with any vagaries in what was being taught. My own school had RE for the curriculum and additional lessons teaching the faith and social values. I guess those lessons would be social studies these days, or probably citizenship.

I've never heard of that, but the theory isn't correct anyway. The vast majority of my friends who grew up with the bullshit Catholic education I did would be siding towards atheism if not keeping one foot in the Catholic door for the odd right of passage ceremony. I can think of one or two friends who are proper 'go to church' Catholics and quite frankly I talk about them a bit to others <whistle>

I don't know that at all. I had never heard of that before .
I had thought you might be referencing the saying "give me the boy at seven years of age and I will show you the man". That has an entirely different meaning altogether.

Hahaha - dont get me wrong Mick. There many different versions of Protestantism with some being very brainwashy, some seriously ****ing boring, some narrowminded and then you get the "middle of the roaders".

Ask B-Celtic about this I'm not even joking, in Ballymena Ian Paisley's Free Presbyterians put padlocks on the park swings on a Sunday so the kids can't play on the Sabbath.

To be quite honest, all christian denominations should be quite "brainwashy" as that is their purpose. That is their whole purpose. The ones that aren't being "brainwashy" are just trying to be clever about it.

You say that, but all the Churches and Congregations I have went to as a Protestant are just plain boring. It seems whilst they preach they are telling you a story rather than selling you something.... Perhaps a reason for the decline. Or perhaps the parisheners are now so enlightened that they dont give a **** anymore or believe it anymore.

The latter part is most likely true.

i was in a parish in London where the priest who came in was a convert from CofE. A really lovely guy, but he had no business in this parish at all. The churchgoers were the working classes from an irish, African, West Indian and Eastern European background. In delivering his homily, he tried to make up his own parable. He was citing Vivaldi to try and make a point. I looked all around the place and these blank faces were staring back at him. It was an excellent homily, but it didn't hit who it meant to hit. It had no impact at all.

Another day I was in a more middle class parish where a Scottish Priest delivered his Homily which was about his own journey to faith which was quite a leap from the norm. He said things I had never heard from a priest before. i really liked his honesty but nearly everyone else found it in poor taste.

Swap those two priests around and you have a congregation fully engaged and involved in what they are there to do.
 
Jumped a bit from Creationism there.

It isnt something that troubles the vast majority of Christians.

I no longer practice and probably class myself as protestant minded agnostic...if there is such a thing. So really couldnt give a flying ****ing about creationism.

Was in Jerusalem a few weeks ago - that is some ****ed up place. Religion goes/is wrong..
 
Have you ever done one of those "what faith are you" tests? It can't pinpoint you doctrinally but it seems to show people up pretty accurately. I always come in at a Liberal Protestant which is almost right as I was educated in a particularly liberal brand of Catholicism.

Religion can and does cause problems but it doesn't have to.

couldnt care about creationists, and anybody that believes in a higher power deserves put down , but i'm new to this site, have no idea how to start a new thread thought i'd starts off here

Hmm, well I'm in complete contradiction to that one. Never mind.

There used to be this boy in my biology class whose Dad was a vicar. When we were doing evolution, the vicar wrote to the head of the school complaining that evolution should only be represented as theory, not fact. So the teacher was forced to refer to it as evolution 'theory'. Every time he had to say it, he did the little hand movements for 'theory' and generally took the piss out of the poor kid. Quite funny though.

Has anyone heard of the church of the flying spaghetti monster? Its quite a clever argument, where a group of atheists created a religion, with its own creationism history. They then wrote to the education board in the USA arguing that its unfair to teach Christian creationism as fact, which many places do, without mentioning their theory of creation.
