Whilst I was reading up on it again, I came across this article. Really shows how much his death has hit his family and his hometown...

I was watching a YouTube of Mark Cohn singing "Walking in Memphis" the other day and what he said in his introduction made me think. He thanked the audience for coming out to watch him, and then said, basically, that there was no longer a recording industry any more, and that whereas in the old days artists would go on tour to promote an album, nowadays they bring out an album to promote a tour, as the tour is the only way they can make money any more. He then said "Maybe that's the way it was always meant to be", which I thought was an interesting take on the situation.

This makes me feel better about using Spotify, because although Spotify is obviously part of the reason sales of recordings have plummeted, it does have the effect of actually making people want to go and see the artist they are listening to. Live music, at whatever level, whether it's in the O2, or Glastonbury, or at the open mic night down the pub, is what music is all about.

Yes and no Chilco. I absolutely agree that albums are made from a commercial sense to promote a money-spinning tour. However, I don't know that I agree live is what music is all about - it can be an intensely private experience too. Some of the most emotional musical moments I've had (my God, that sounds pretentious, sorry) are sitting with headphones on my ears when you can hear some of the wonderful subtleties. Time and place stuff as well. There's room for all of it.

The other issue with things like Spotify/piracy etc hitting recorded music sales, is that because now the live costs have to be bumped to make up shortfalls, it's preventing a lot of people who would otherwise like to go to the shows, to be able to afford to do so.....

Fallen tree in freemantle road (near spring road) has hit two cars. One of the cars had two children in it was a mess. A air ambulance landed on Freemantle common and airlift them to Hospital. Hope they are ok!

Yeah I have to agree with both your points LTL. I suppose the truth is that I just don't bother sitting down and listening to music at home very much any more, apart from having Radio 6 on while I'm cooking or whatever. I do know, however, that when I do really want to listen to a particular track or album, I have to be on my own, as I can't stand anyone interrupting the experience.

Seeing live music, on the other hand, is very definitely for sharing with your friends and loved ones, and as you say, nowadays that can be a very costly exercise if you want to see a top act. That's why I think open mic nights, folk clubs, acoustic clubs, or whatever are brilliant, because you usually get to see some very good local talent for the price of a few drinks. And you can have a go yourself as well!

Everyone remembers the "17 year old" Lazio player Beefy posted a few days ago?

Well, a Senegalese website is claiming that he's admitted to actually being 42. What a shocker.

The wind here mid-afternoon was crazy. I cancelled the kids footy training and within half an hour the rain stopped, the wind dropped and the sun shone briefly. It is now very windy again.
