I think there's an issue in the way that the FDA has been massively politicised under Trump, and there is a danger that he'll use them to push through a vaccine simply to expedite the opening up of the economy again. It's definitely one that needs scrutiny and vigilance.

Although recently the FDA have been at pains to reiterate their science first stance. As they should <ok>

I don;t think you understand how the FDA works. A president cannot interfere in the work of scientists.
The FDA has a panel of scientists who approve, the scientists at the CDC (who are largely left leaning) also will work on this, and the eyes of every other interested scientific party is also watching the developments

You are buying media horseshit

If Trump somehow managed to replace all those involved, then I'd listen to that line of thought

The scientists would be the first to leak that they were being told to cut dangerous corners

I cant imagine scientists working on this are prepared to rush it and potentially kill 100s of thousands of people

It's not media horseshit mate, concerns were raised by the former FDA chief.

'President Donald Trump has not said who he wants to head the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates a quarter of the U.S. economy. But Trump has made headlines by meeting with candidates for the job who publicly proposed that newly approved drugs need not be effective or that regulations should be rolled back so more medicines could be approved.'

In April this year, a whistle-blower lawsuit was filed alleging inappropriate pressure from the White House to promote an unproven treatment (the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine) for COVID-19. Under pressure from President Donald Trump, the FDA had issued an emergency-use authorization for the medication in March, only to backtrack weeks later.

In August, the FDA commissioner, Stephen Hahn, stood with the president on the eve of the Republican National Convention to announce the authorization of convalescent plasma as treatment for COVID-19. The president made misleading statements about the evidence supporting this treatment and asserted without evidence that FDA staff were holding up approvals for political reasons.

That stubbornness to not be cowed was what stopped the Krauts in the 40s, and that stubbornness is a liability if a deadly virus breaks out.

I ****ing hate those war analogies tbh mate.

That generation did what needed to be done, the current one talks about the spirit of the blitz and all that, but then the very same people cry their ****ing eyes out about having to wear a piece of cloth over their mush for 15 minutes while they do their Aldi shop. They’re oppressing me <wah> oh the humanity. Self absorbed cock ends.

It is horseshit. A former official comes out against the current admin every 5 minutes because like every other group, they've taken sides. I dont take that as anything, especially over the actual current top man. I need more than a possible Trump enemy to go on.

Yes Trump did rush through authorisation because the drug is well known, and there were a large portion of the medical community screaming for him to do so. It's in use for a very long time and no, not dangerous, at worst there was no effect on COVID. Studies have shown overall, either no effect or effect as a prophylactic or on early onset of infection states.

AS for the walk back, this is not a google search competition. There was a reason why it was walked back and why the WHO stopped immediately all testing of the hydroxychloroquine
Are you aware that the Lancet published a paper by a made up company with made up data showing hydroxychloroquine was dangerous and doesnt work? it was a massive scandal and the WHO canceled all research into hydroxychloroquine as a result of that fake paper the Lancet published
It is also ludicrous to even think that scientists who are very left leaning and very un-fond of Trump admin would play a part in putting out a vaccine that even if it only killed 1% of people, would be almost 4 million Americans.

The person who is going around saying it's going to be rushed and that these vaccine companies will need immunity is Bill Gates, he said it on BBC

If you want citations for any of this, just ask <ok>

hydroxychloroquine of course is now a generic with no patent, funny that, no one could make money off of it

There is also a massive difference between pressuring for a known safe drug to be used to try save people (the panic was extreme) especially with pressure coming from the medical community, and allegedly pressuring the release of an untested vaccine

That's just c-theory level stuff one can only believe if they don't know how the process goes in OKing a vaccine that a billion people might need to take

The Lancet, the supposed premier Medical journal

"
The Lancet paper that halted global trials of hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19 because of fears of increased deaths has been retracted after a Guardian investigation found inconsistencies in the data.

The lead author, Prof Mandeep Mehra, from the Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston, Massachusetts decided to ask the Lancet for the retraction because he could no longer vouch for the data’s accuracy.

The journal’s editor, Richard Horton, said he was appalled by developments. “This is a shocking example of research misconduct in the middle of a global health emergency,” he told the Guardian."

My **** of an MP voted against free meals over the half term

It breaks my heart to see this going on. How the **** can this be allowed to happen in a country that enables millionaires to thrive, big business to cream off vast profits, a country that can afford to sink £205bn into Trident, yet can't even afford to pay for the meals of Children whose parents can't afford them for one week of the half term.

Get the **** out of here with that ****. This is basic human values that are being failed here. It ****ing disgusts me.

And this bit...

"I don't have the education of a politician, many on Twitter have made that clear today"

I can only imagine what that means, but I wouldn't want to look because it'll only show the very worst of human nature I'm sure.

Question for folks

When we get over this coof stuff. Does anyone believe that if something similar happens in a decade from now, that it will be handled competently in the UK and around the world in general?

I ask because we've had 6 years since Ebola 2012-2014 to do something, and the response to Ebola, in WHOs own words, was a failure
