It’s just the flu, man up and go to the pub.

Carol is a deranged panic monger loony (she did the same about social media using an utterly flawed data and society study). While playing it down is not helpful as I am sure you'd agree, this kind of "this is our future" panic mongering is imo even worse. She's a bigger conspiracy theorist than me! <laugh>

Northern Italy is a different case altogether. The outbreak kicked off there without anyone having a clue and there is a huge ageing population in Northern Italy

Many in Northern Italy sold their leather/textiles companies to China. Italy then allowed 100,000 Chinese from Wuhan/Wenzhou to move to Italy to work in these factories, with direct Wuhan flights.

That is why Italy got shafted and why the UK will most likely not be a Northern Italy

I’ve forwarded your message to my mate working flat out in an already overrun hospital for reassurance. Cheers.

Source?

What does that even mean? It certainly relates to nothing in my post (unless you claim UK is suffering like Northern Italy?)

Even during these times you cant help yourself can you

It relates directly to your last paragraph. We don’t have to even have the same number of cases as Northern Italy to become a Northern Italy.

I hear ya. I think this is very different though for multiple reasons.
Italy is what happens when the Virus comes in as it did, undetected, and infected a lot of older people

Intensive care beds and equipment as a proportion of total hospital beds tiny.
Northern Italy was infected while China was still covering it up in early mid December most likely. No measures at all, even public awareness could take place.

Obviously, the issue here is aiming for less cases of serious risk than we have the equipment for. We also now have some other good news on treatment that we hope will lower the need for intensive care and ventilators plus as the weather warms, the potency of COVID they say will decline. I hope that's accurate.

The big problem is this is on top of season flu too (which is in part why people "comparing" it to the flu is moronic)
I am certainly not taking this as a "no problem" sort of thing.

Priorities
1 Capacity for life threatening cases while doing everything to prevent rapid spread (its going to spread regardless)
2 People need money to eat
3 wtf do we do with the economic situation

On that note of beds (re intensive care being the minority of beds) this blows my mind

A 26 year old man arrested on the Isle of Man. He had just arrived on the Island and failed to comply with legislation there requiring him to self-isolate on arrival, he is now in a police cell. I think they said you can receive up to a £10k fine, ouch!

Serves him right. When your apathy or carelessness can kill someone else, I'm all for this sort of thing.

They should round up all those spring breakers in the US and put them in sing sing with older inmates and lets see if they still want to blather about not caring about older people and the virus.

This will confuse some people. He was their hero.

Responding to suggestions that he should not be issuing pronouncements on how to deal with coronavirus, Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin said he was entitled to make public statements on the outbreak.

“We’re a democracy aren’t we? I’m obviously not an expert, nor am I an economist, but i’ve got a view and that’s all I can say. People can accept it or not. Even if you’re not an epidemiologist you can look at what other countries do and weigh up what’s happened.”

The pub chain has said its 870 UK pubs will stay open but with precautions in place, such as no standing at the bar, frequent surface wipedowns and customers asked to sit far apart from each other where possible.

But Martin warned that a long-term shutdown could be terminal for any pub company.

“Even if you’ve got the greatest pub company in the world, you depend on the doors being open. If they shut for long enough the entire hospitality industry, never mind Wetherspoons will be in serious trouble.”

Bet he’s got his eye on some cheap sites and competitors to hoover up as we speak.

Surely anyone in the same position is going to make similar comments? He’s obviously going to try to protect his business. It won’t make a difference though as takings will be plummeting on a daily basis. I expect he’ll join a long list of businesses needing financial help.

I hadn't thought about how this could ruin his business. Another silver lining.

Well the government owe him a favour. Let's see if they reward his devoted service! <laugh>

This is a big issue, the messaging coming from the likes of ^^ and the other end of the spectrum telling us we're doomed and to panic.

Who's going to go to pubs if the economy is smashed because pubs help fuel the spread and turn this into a long drawn out unmitigated human and economic disaster

The damage to pub companies will be greater imo if pubs remain open and full of punters pissed and spewing virus everywhere

Interesting article on how Germany are preparing

https://www.ft.com/content/c0755b30-69bb-11ea-800d-da70cff6e4d3

"Last week, the federal government ordered an extra 10,000 life-saving ventilators from a German manufacturer, on top of the 25,000 that are already in place in hospitals across the country. The city state of Berlin, which has so far recorded 391 cases of Covid-19, is converting parts of the local trade fair ground into a 1,000-bed hospital for future coronavirus patients. Similar steps have been taken across the country."

They are currently testing 160,000 per week.

This compares to the UK
"The number of tests has been rising from just over 1,000 a day at the end of February, when testing began, to more than 6,000 per day by mid-March. The government plans to increase this to 10,000 a day initially, with a goal of reaching 25,000 tests a day within four weeks."

But Coronabyn

If that burnham chap lead the Labour Party they would win the next election by a landslide

I voted for him as leader twice, the Owen Smith, then left the party. I re-joined to vote for Lisa Nandy, but voted for Keir Starmer so as not to split the vote for Long-Baily to squeak through.

But hey ho, using the logic of some on here, we should cancel this parliament as it hasn't run its full term and declare the election null and void, and start again. But not with Corbyn, ffs.

Here the vodka maker has switched to production of sanitizers

One of the good things about capitalism is we have so much industry we can switch over to making equipment drugs and sanitizers.

It has nothing to do with capitalism.

You were given a fact. There has never been a vaccine successfully produced that works against any corona virus. The fact that a vaccine for COVID-19 is shortly to be trialled is no guaranteed that it’ll actually work.

Tobes, let me warn you - getting into an argument about facts and science with Diego is even worse than coronavirus for your respiratory system. You may as well go back to the original source and ask the bats (or is it pangolins now?) to stop being hosts for the mutating viruses.
