We've just set up a support group in my area to support the vulnerable elderly and self isolaters. You've probably seen those help cards online. We're using that as a template and we've got around 50 volunteers who've agreed to help already, hopefully more will join.
I've been speaking with some of my local councillors, they've got an emergency meeting tomorrow, so hopefully they can help to coordinate all of this too and give us the resources we need, face masks, hand sanitiser etc. Spoke to my GP friend earlier today and she basically said that the time for social distancing and self isolation for the elderly is NOW. The govt are dragging their heels and the opportunity to limit the spread is quickly diminishing.
Here in Cornwall we have 21 ICU beds. My friend anticipates that we will need hundreds. I asked whether the GP surgeries would be able to assist in helping us to identify needs for those at risk, she said their protocols are coming down to things like who gets oxygen and who doesn't. I really felt for her, the GP's and health care workers are going to have to make some hideous decisions over the coming weeks and months.
Sobering stuff.
I'd urge you all please if you have elderly relatives to encourage them to self isolate now, don't wait for the Govt to tell you to do so. They can still go out for walks, drive in the car etc. But the over 70's shouldn't be going anywhere near Supermarkets, Pubs, Cafes, or any places where large numbers of people congregate.
I'd also please urge you all to look out for your neighbours and offer whatever support you can. It's going to get really bumpy over the coming weeks....
