Don’t cry, just accept that people choosing to go to Uni is their choice.

i do i just said it is ridiculous the numbers going these days as it has lessened the value of many degrees .
oh and you misinterpreted my reply to WWR which referred to the fun at uni sometimes aint the best idea as in "seemed like a good idea at the time" not seeming to impress Mr Plod .

Don't know why the government didn't just get on with full national lockdown at the weekend.

Pathetic that they think 'freedom-living' Brits need o be drip-fed bad news, while lives are lost.

I'd hire a uni student who can apply himself and solve problems with critical thinking over a non-graduate in most cases

End of the day qualifications give you options, Uni is a way of getting qualifications and it opens doors to Jobs on most occasions.

Surprise, surprise, it is all our fault for all leaving the pub en masse at 10pm.

And surprise, surprise, next week that will be 'reason' for closing pubs.

Such a coward BJ for not having balls and just shutting pubs straightaway

Unless you're doing a very specific degree like Marine Biology or Offshore hydro energy production, then most degrees will open the door to a lot of jobs, as a fair amount of employers want to see that you're able to complete a degree, understand the work and dedication involved, be able to articulate yourself and present ideas in a coherent way. There are lots of transferable skills from a degree to a job that isn't just a manual labour job.

Yes, even when people are middle aged going for senior roles, you feel that some critical skills aren't there if they missed out on the chance to study at college level

Agreed. Just that it gives employers some confidence if they can see that somebody has the chutzpah to complete a degree.

Depends what skills are required. I used to hire and fire for Royal Mail in my last job. Believe it or not, a postman’s job does require a certain level of ability, plus an attitude of mind plenty of people don’t have.

Assuming the candidate has those qualities give me a man in his 40s every time, he probably has responsibilities and he’s going to come to work, on time, on a Monday morning <ok>

I've done the whole recruitment thing. You can't really get an impression of somebody until you meet them in interview, but the thing that will make you more likely to get you that interview in the first place is a degree. The jobs I used to recruit for in the NHS would attract 75-100 applicants, so you're reading through tonnes of guff just to get to shortlisting stage. And assuming that all of those who get shortlisted have met the essential and desirable parts of the application, then you're looking for that 'bit extra'.

That said, I've interviewed some graduates who've turned out to be absolute ****ing spanners, with no clue and zero common sense.
