The difference is this year we are carrying out little or no "other," operations or treatment s except Covid.

In some hospitals most beds are full of Covid patients

Add in to that how the bed capacity has been being reduced for economic reasons over the last 10-15 years...

We have therefore converted a number of other wards, and theatres into Covid wards and called in all trained doctors and nurses..

Add into that our staff are exhausted

This is different and no this is not exaggeration...this is not a hoax.

1400 deaths in a single day...get your heads around that.... With 60, 000 new positives a day...this is not going to magically disappear.

Do we know where people are contracting covid? What are the numbers of people going to hospital with covid symptoms vs people who go in for other reasons and contract it once inside?

Do you think?

It’s probably important to add context to the number of covid deaths by also stating total, all cause mortality and to further compare that number to previous years.

No, I don’t.

and that’s true. The real toll will be the excess deaths both now and for this year. I doubt it’ll be pleasant reading.

60,000 new positives a day?

Please help me to understand this PHE info which seems tell us that 37 cases of covid 19 have been recorded in England and Wales in the last week.

This won't it explain it to your satisfaction Woody...but these are reports from GPs to the government of infectious diseases in their practice. Covid positive tests are being handled by extra governmental agencies...and there is little or no feed back to the GPs ( basically the GPs are not making the diagnosis, and are so are being bypassed)...The GPs also know that the Covid results are being fed to the government separately and so they would be duplicating known results

And secondly everyone is too damn busy to report an infectious disease that everyone knows is sweeping through the country.

This system is usually used to identify outbreaks of measles or diptheria...and is the first line of the normal trace and track system..in normal times.

I hope that explains that.

No it is not a conspiracy and no it is not a hoax

Understood. Thanks Beth.

One more question, only answer if you have time and can be bothered....

If someone received any of the covid vaccines, would they then test PCR positive subsequently?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Woody.

My last up date on the PCR test for Covid was that it is now a 3 part test.
They put in markers for 3 different parts of the Covid virus ( it was how they detected the new variant)

One of the markers detects the spike protein, one the core protein and I am not sure what the third part detects but it is specific for Coronovirus.

The vaccine only contain small amount of the spike protein/DNA.. this is what triggers the antibody response.

So I would think that the threshold for positivity would be below the levels in the vaccine...but anyway that doesn't really matter as the other two parts of the test would be negative...and so declared negative.

This is how we picked up the new variant...the tests of obviously very sick people were coming back as weak positive for spike but strong positive for the other two... something had obviously changed.

Now I have no idea what the laminar flow test will show against the vaccine as I have no idea what it shows confronted by real people either.
I do agree that the flow tests are very unreliable ( and I don't what population of the current tests are done PCR or by Flow) and so I am willing to say that some of those 60,000 cases may be false positives...my friend Keith was.

Also note after the vaccination, you should be positive on the antibody test ( obviously)... Although the antibody test is no longer being done routinely..
That have other things to worry about at the moment

Hope that helps

On 8th Jan 1325 people died.
I don't want to sound pedantic but do you mean on 8th Jan 1325 death were recorded?
They didn't all die yesterday some had died over the Christmas period and due to office closures there is a delay. This is my understanding.

It’s a shame you sound pedantic then.

The First positive case in my family today.

My Sister tested positive this morning. Her husband is also sick and assumed positive. Her younger Daughter is also sick and has a test this afternoon. The older Daughter is 8 months pregnant so hopefully she hasn't caught it.

We had 8,248 new cases in Ireland yesterday. The thing is getting out of control.

Absolutely...like every single other day report during the pandemic. Every day reports catch ups...and weekends are lower, and Monday to Wednesday are higher...and Christmas will also be involved..

It is tried to be smoothed out with the rolling 7 day average...which has been steadily rising

But these people still died..and so yes you are being pedantic

That's not being pedantic. People keep saying 1000 (or whatever) died of Covid yesterday when that is not correct. The figures come through once registered, which can take 3 weeks. Still not a good thing but it is correct. Especially when many think 1300 people died of Covid in hospital yesterday.

I'm sorry to interject into the Coronavirus thread as I know only certain posts count.

So it was probably over 1000 on the days we were reporting just under 1000.

That the numbers don’t all relate to the exact day of reporting isn’t much of a revelation after ten months but appreciate the thought all the same.

Don't worry Watford I have learned my lesson. How dare I point anything out on the 'intellectual thread' it's far above my pay grade. I will go back to the threads for the common folk and let all the well-informed mob pat each other on the back.
