I'm afraid I can't join the Johnson appreciation society on here. It seems to me that the government's reaction to this crisis has been slow, confused and contradictory. It seems to be doing the right things eventually, but too slowly, grudgingly, and only in reaction to criticism rather than on its own initiative. Of course this is an horrendous situation to have to deal with, but I'm afraid it's one that Johnson is totally unqualified for and unsuited to.

Tin hat time.
Johnson is obviously unqualified ...any politician is. That is why they have experts.

Johnson job is to lead...and convince us to do what the experts say. At the moment all the politicians are doing well, and there is little political point grabbing.

No, you're correct. As I pointed out he's having to react instead of taking the lead. And Sunak is making him look even worse...

This is what social media is full of at the moment... <laugh>

Just picked up my flint tipped spear and donned my rabbit skin loin cloth (it’s an arresting sight) for a little light hunter gathering in town. Another lovely day, but very few people about on the walk in. A few more in the town centre, but most shops closed. I was expecting to be disappointed, seeing everything cleaned out by 8.00 am shoppers.

Butchers has delivered on its promise, lots of fresh veg out front. Boots has marked out decent social distancing zones around its tills and has hand sanitiser (one per customer). M&S food hall has also marked out safe spaces around its checkouts, and was just about fully stocked. The big Tesco also seemed to have stuff on the shelves but no floor markings and a much more febrile atmosphere. Between the butchers and M&S I got everything I wanted and more. Perhaps we have turned a little corner. Tesco’s is, from where I stand, coming out of this very badly.
Stack' em high sell' em cheap - difficult I suppose to get out of old habits. I'd bet anything that the booze is also being sold at below cost price - to entice the punters in. Always was a scumbag food retailer

No tin hat necessary, Strolls. I'm not sure who exactly is qualified and suited to deal with this situation, though.

I've been reading all the criticism on Twitter, seemingly led by Piers Morgan, and am not wholly clear on what to make of it. If I was PM and was surrounded by medical, scientific and other experts, then I'd presumably be a fool not to follow their advice under the present circumstances? If Johnson hasn't been following their advice, then I'd have expected someone to have broken ranks and resigned by now, or for Johnson to have replaced them if he didn't like the advice they were giving. I'm not aware that's happened yet, so can only conclude that his government is following the advice, or at least there's a degree of acceptable compromise within the group. Maybe this isn't so, but there's not been much dissent coming out from within this group.

A bit has been made of the government's about-turn on strategy following Imperial College's revised projections but, when the 'facts' change (if IC's work is indeed fact), then you'd presumably be pretty ballsy to ignore it, I would suppose.

The bottom-line is that nobody wants preventable deaths on their hands, but neither do they want to shag the economy more than is necessary, which might in itself lead to hardship and even death in the future. Perhaps one should only deal with what's immediately in front at times like these?

Not looking good for the USA, 60% increase in cases in one day up to over 38,000. New York declared 'Disaster Zone', just what Trump needs in election year...
Teaches him right for under-estimating the possible impact of this virus. It will be interesting to see how their healthcare system copes.

Just seen news of 5 ambulances damaged in Kent by someone drilling holes into their tyres while parked up at base.
Also stories emerging of NHS staff being mugged at knifepoint for their pass.......this world is full of ****s
Scum is too kind a word for these kind of people. I hope they don't need one of those ambulances for themselves.

PM Jacinda Ardern announces country going into lockdown for four weeks
  • - New Zealand has been lifted to alert level three and alert level four in 48 hours.
    - Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said community transmission is a possibility in New Zealand now. She said, "staying at home is essential".
    - All non-essential businesses must close in 48 hours. This includes bars, restaurants, cinemas, playgrounds. Essential services will remain open.
    - All indoor and outdoor events are banned.
    - Schools will close from tomorrow.
    - All of these measures will remain in place for about four weeks. The government will have zero tolerance for people ignoring these restrictions, and police will be used to enforce them if required.
    - The government is freezing rent increases to ease the pressure of restrictions.
    - The wage subsidy cap has been lifted to $9.1 billion.
    - There are 36 new coronavirus cases in New Zealand, bringing the total confirmed count to 102.
    - Most cases are linked to recent overseas travel, however, there are two that aren't linked to travel.

We need such stringent stay at home measures in the UK as the thickos in our society are just not getting it.

The message is very simple, stay at home & watch tele or listen to the radio, browse the internet, take up online gaming. Nothing else!

Will be interesting to see the Italian figures when they come in today. I know its very early and will get worse but i am surprised there wasn't a bigger jump here? looking at our stats and Italy they were increasing greatly each day whereas ours seems different.
