Believe it or not Col I don’t expect the government to organise local services, I think there are administrative issues in different regions and localities which is down to them, in some cases a simple lack of urgency.

I heard a truly dreadful story about what happened to the terminally ill husband of a good friend of my wife, who was basically sent home and ignored once he had a terminal (rare cancer) diagnosis. The district nurses refused to change his dressings or even look at his wound, they had to buy their own dressings and saline drips…….only when the Marie Curie nurses got involved did things improve. This is not a government responsibility it’s an institutional failing, non existent communication between GP, local hospital and cancer centre. Not, admittedly, a COVID related story - although he didn’t go into a hospice because only a couple of members of his family would have been allowed to visit him - but indicative of how simple things get ****ed up, I’m certain that 20 miles down the road his treatment would have been much better, although the outcome was, sadly, inevitable.

Very strange at home tonight - both kids are in on a Friday night. Both have decided that they don’t want to spend Christmas in isolation, which makes me happy as if they were isolating I would doubtless have to as well. But from what we are told this new thing is so transmissible short of locking yourself in there is a chance you’ll get it even if you don’t know you have it. Perhaps it will continue spreading so fast and burn it self out quickly.

Just back from Booster clinic, queued around block already. Nurse told us they are doing 1600 jags today, which is about 5% of the population of Inverclyde so pretty impressive, although there is a bit of anger locally as one of the vaccine centres is shut this weekend - but this is due to staff shortages.

Scottish health ministers are urging everyone to get jagged before New Year, #boostedbythebells - although if what is being projected, we'll all have had it by then. If so, then hopefully this **** could burn itself out in a final flourish (as if we'd be that lucky)

If the ‘doubling every two and a bit days’ claims are true we should be seeing about 140,000 positive tests declared today. I don’t think we will by a long chalk. Could still be an accurate claim but it could be that loads of people are completely asymptomatic and test numbers don’t reflect reality. Or it could be that existing vaccinations and previous infections offer more protection than thought.

Weird scenes inside the goldmine. I’m beginning to think the big problems will be caused by people doing the right thing and self isolating, even if not actually unwell, and being absent from work in huge numbers.

Plus count yourself lucky to have a single vaccine centre . Warwick District has a population of 150,000 and we have none. Minimum 8 mile drive to the nearest one, which is fine for me but difficult for many. Big local centre (still not in town) reopening but bookings only and no available slots until after new year. My family all done now, and all with Moderna, I suspect they are trying to use up the stocks and make sure everyone has a ‘mix’ of jabs.

One of my son's pals works at a local testing centre....before Omicron appeared on the scene, they would regularly get the same people in every Monday, just after lunchtime, saying that they had close contacts over weekend....they've been picking appointments on Monday PM as they know PCR results.don't come back til Weds at earliest, so they get three days off work, and this doesn't go against any sick time as it's Covid related - ****in scamming bastards.

We have two vaccine clinics locally. All three of us have had two AZ and one Pfizer

A lot better, thanks for asking. She's about 95% of where she was prior to Long Covid. Back at work, and having a bit of a social life too (until it all got curtailed this weekend). Suffering from really strange aches and pains in her neck and spine, they think the virus may have attacked and damaged (hopefully not permanently) some of her central nevous system. She was really worried about getting Pfizer today as she'd been advised against it during the first wave of vaccinations as they weren't sure how it would interact with Long Covid, but they appear to have done some studies on this now, and it seems ok - well she's not passed out yet!

We know there’s a lag on these things so if it really is kicking off with infections it’ll be just after Xmas that it all goes to ****.

Just keep the football grounds and gyms open and the coffee shop near me. Nothing else is essential.

Major Incident declared in London, largely because of absences in public services from what I can make out.

Hospital admissions in London ‘up by 200 a day’ apparently. But for the first time in this whole thing some interesting breakdown on the BBC news website. At least one in five of these admissions are people admitted with something else, like a broken leg, who test positive for COVID. There is a difference between admitted ‘with’ and admitted ‘for’ of course, as we all know. Would also be interesting to know the average length of stay for those admitted ‘for’ and how many of them end up in ITU needing oxygen. The evidence from South Africa is that people hospitalised with Omicron are discharged faster than those with Delta and far fewer need ITU or oxygen. Of course London has the lowest vaccination rate in the country, a third of people haven’t had any jabs at all, 40% in …….Westminster.

Chris Whitty is keen that we ignore this. He said two weeks ago that we would know about the seriousness and likely impact of this variant in two weeks, now it’s the New Year. Talk of a ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown after Christmas. If this variants needs that surely it should happen now? Surely too late for that kind of stuff. The boosters have to be the key thing.

Just hope all the ****ers in London that could have been vaccinated and aren't, don't expect hospital beds around the country taking up spaces needed by local people.
