I couldn't agree more. Children need to be stretched, not find the level and administer to it, but rather find the level and push it up.

In fairness and speaking as someone who's always struggled with maths, it can be tough but don't cater to the lowest level, cater to a higher level [not the highest because you run the risk of losing the majority if you cater to the very top] . This video method is madness!

I threw a chair at my history teacher, it seemed to resolve the argument.

He was picking on some other kid which had riled me, I was then leaning back on my chair and fell over, he started calling me names and telling me I would get nowhere in life. I saw red and launched it, missed the ****er though. <laugh>

I guess depend what you mean by picking on. I witnessed our teacher in primary school choking a student up againt the blackboard because he didn't have his homework done.

I was also told at 4 years old, I still remember it, that if I stopped thinking about Jesus I would die <yikes>

Some teachers were idiots and he had no right to speak to me in the way he did but my reaction was extreme, my temper was somewhat curbed when I joind the RAF the instructors would simple kick the **** out of you if you had a gob on you, perspective was found and reaction was more considered. For a while at least.

My son is frequently in tears doing maths at home. Common core has some really stupid ideas.

I don't even understand their multiplication. Some weird 3d grid thing they're supposed to do.

I'll frequently say "look it's easy... Just do this..." and show him the easy way to do things and he'll say that we're not allowed to do it that way. The teachers tell the kids that if parents show them a different way they are to ignore the advice. Its crazy.

Also. Grades are given purely on answers (the teachers don't even look at how kids derived the answers... So how do they know if kids are doing common core or the way parents taught them).

When I was in school HOW you got your answer was more important than the answer. If you understood the concept but accidentally put wrong number down you still got most of the credit. Now its "we don't have time to look at what you did, just show us the answer".

Makes you wonder how these things get introduced, when anyone with an iota of common sense can see they're a spectacularly stupid idea.

Yeah, but it's all ok, cos at the end of the day you just use a calculator, don't you...

Sadly, some think that that's a valid excuse.
