I guess the world is a better place for some because of it, but a poorer place for others. It depends whose perspective you are looking from.
Looking at your own.
Of my friends who have descended from the slave trade, most are basically in acceptance of what happened meant they are here, but do not condone slavery but without they would not be here. One is, to be honest, so anti slavery and what happened to slaves he will never be convinced he would not be here had it not happened, even his brother cant convince him.
Take slavery out of the picture. Merchants would have still plied their trade. Tobacco and sugar still grown. Cotton would still have been a staple for east coast states. Trade with West Africa, gold minerals etc would still have been traded. AFRICAN tribes would have continued killing each other instead of taking them prisoner and selling them. The world would have moved on slower, some economies never established. The industrial revolution may have come about in the 1900's anyone reading this might not have been born. Certainly people like Samuel L Jackson or Will Smith · Denzel Washington · Morgan Freeman · Samuel L. Jackson · Jamie Foxx · Sidney Poitier may never have given us such wonderful entertainment Pat Bath, Dan Williams, Henrietta Lacks, Charles Drew Percy Julian pioneers in science would not have been part of history... a case could be made that neither WW would have happened?

They have even named a road in their honour..<yikes>

I hope that's a wind up ?!
But even if it isn't, (and frankly in this day and age I am surprised by nothing), surely the fact that the road name dares to state the word COLSTON should have the woke left frothing at the mouth ?

Edit - It appears it isn't a wind up, but what a peculiar coincidence that where this outrage has been placed is the same location that the Mayor supposedly lives. Just sayin'

Total disgrace and a petition should be presented to take it down, and sack him, or the local official who approved this.

Rees is a typical self serving labour hypocrite, who has publicly said what happened was against the law and wrong, even though nearly 3 years ago Bristol labour MP Thangham Debonnaire asked him to do something about the statue, something that would have saved all of this unnecessary tax payers expense, it also painfully obvious that the police made him aware during the lead up to the protest that the statue needed protecting because information was that there was going to be an attack on the statue, I think it's also fair to assume that the police thought f*** it if he doesn't care why should we.

Rees has been a huge disaster for the city, even worse than red trousers and that is an achievement, his latest pollution charges will further kill off Broadmead and whatever name they have adopted for the shopping centre. His energy scheme lost 15mil, double that of anywhere else in the country. Had a 9k a year pay rise in 2020, sanctioned a 98k pay out to a former council chief executive believed to be hush money, wasted millions over many years into feasibility studies into the siting of the Bristol arena, wasted money on the Bristol metro bus scheme, on alterations and almost 50mil over budget although skate boarders and knobs on his scooters like it.

He is utterly useless. I bet he is boycotting Thatchers as well.

confirms MR is in favour of minority, and wasting money. HAS to cut services etc in BRISTOL TO TUNE OF £20M ... MY OH MY he wasted £xm on changing previous mayors road schemes, slowed down traffic to increase pollution which is the bowl of Bristol, then wanted a toll.. Wasted £m's on the TM stadium ... will go down in Bristol history as an as*w**e in my book.
Mind you it does advertise the fact that 4 peeps got off for damaging a statue of Edward Colston [ because jury didnt have a clue what they were residing over ] one of the benefactors of the city of Bristol, giving us the sound base of what we have today irrespective of race colour or creed

I'm not a cider drinker as a rule, but I'd hate to think that he was.
This is also a Mayor who sanctions the sending out of surveys on things that matter to Bristol, but only sends to certain postcodes within the inner city (where he supposedly lives) about stuff like woke-ness, historical misdemeanours, and then implements things without the rest of the population of the city even being aware of it which is just plain wrong.

Is he only allowed to serve 2 terms in office ? As the sooner he goes the better, or just get shot of him and his inflated ego and salary, and let's go back to just having a ceremonial Mayor without the 'my poor people' politics and constantly playing the race card.

I'll also wager he took a very nice cut (or that he will do at some point down the line) from the Bristol Arena location which he deliberately blocked from being at Temple Meads.

Bristol should also have an Airport fit for the 21st Century with the longest runway in the South West at Filton, but no, we're stuck with Lulsgate with limits to aircraft size and any meaningful expansion.

we sold the airport in 2 stages [ council owned it before ] 51% THEN 49% what ever happened to the money we were supposed to get, a large reduction in council tax with first payment ... no ... should have kept our bills down for x years ...no next payment kept up the good work .... no ... a big con....yes .... council in charge>>>> labour /liberal...say no more

Marv the juice wil get his saucy cut. After all why would you pay consultants to write an independant report advising the council not to build at Temple meads, and recommend building at another site the consultants had financial interest in. Double kerching.

And now the tosser has thrown his toys out of the pram because he couldn’t get his own way over this year budget.

Not sure if any of you read Private Eye ?
But my Uncle says that several reports of Rees have been made along the lines of

He spends around £3,000 each month on an agency/person/consultant to check on what is said about him on anti-social media so that he can refute it or put out counter-propaganda to the benefit of his image.

If this is public money being used to defend his image then there should be an inquiry and he should be suspended.

just goes to show the bloke is being very wary of being caught out nest lining so needs a sweeper to ensure any leaks are quickly challenged. If you are totally honest and fair then there would be no need, ... they do say best form of defence is attack [ pity City miss out ! ]
